Hello everybody!

I just came upon this forum and thought it would be a good place to get some tips! Just got a Bounty Hunter Prospector DX as a birthday present (one of the ones they sell at Bass Pro,) and I am quite excited about it! The problem is, I have no idea what I am doing! Does anyone out there have any experience using this particular model?? I dug up a little piece of what kind of looks like part of a tin can earlier today, so even though it's not worth nothing, I'm still pumped that I actually found something! Anyhow, any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

maybe someone here that has one can give you a few pointers on it. Get you some items together like some pulltabs, coins, nails, foil, etc. Take them out in your yard and place them on top of the ground and sweep them and get used to how they sound, play around with your controls while doing this. You may even want to bury some, kinda shallow and check their response also. Welcome, and HH.

WildCatStrat,

I got a prospector from bass Pro to... It was middle of the line for price but seemed to have a lot of options. I've taken it out one day so far on 1 beach and one playground with wood chips over dirt. Got some pennies and pull tabs off the beach but the playground was LOADED with cash! I was using a 4" coil to BTW.
I haven't used the 8" coil that came with it yet. I don't know about you but I cant believe the accuracy of this thing, it says dime 2" down and I scrape away the wood and theres a Dime! Awsome :)

Oh yea, I think the wood chips are an add on to the playground because most of the hits were 6" down and I'm assuming that ment the wood was placed over the original dirt... to bad the ground was still frozen! I'm in Ontario Canada EH!

Hey wildcatstrat, congrats on the new detector. I have one a lot like that, the BH Sharpshooter II, minus the depth meter. (I'm jealous), hehe. You have a great machine to learn on, and should become proficient in no time at all. This is a great place to start. Get all the tips you can off here. Most of what you learn will be from hands on experience. Get out and spend some time testing, experimenting, and getting familiar with your machine. I know it doesn't make a whole lot of sense now, but READ YOUR MANUAL. Then when you think you got it, read it again! Like mentioned above, plant some targets, and get to know the different tones they make in disc/notch modes, and practice pinpointing in disc/notch and all metal mode. Happy Hunting and I look forward to seeing your finds!!

Hello wildcatstrat:

Welcome to a great hobby and lifetime passion...it will take you some time to learn your machine's language, but once you do, you will be raking in the Pull-tabs like the rest of us...just kidding...You WILL find a lot of pull-tabs, but you have to dig the trash to get the gold...:surrender: Like mentioned above, read, then re-read your manual...practice with the machine as you read...Then take the items outside and either toss them down on the grass or bury them shallow and scan them...listen to the tones they make, and look at where they register on the target ID...once your comfortable with this, go to the fields and hunt in DISC mode with the SENS at about noon to 2 o'clock and the DISC/NOTCH all the way CCW...You will pick up anything that is metal, and the DISPLAY will register the most Probable target and depth (remember the detector is calibrated for coins only...all other items may register as coins, but may be lead, brass, gold, silver, etc.). After a while, you will almost be able to tell what is under the coil without looking at the screen...Also...A good set of headphones are ESSENTIAL to a good hunt (they save on your batteries, and allow you to hear faint deep signals). As far as digging tools and what not...They are a personal choice and depend on the ground your hunting in...I personally use a LESCHE Tool, and a smaller 6x2 inch trowel I got with my Land Star when I bought it off eBay...I also use the Teknitics pinpoint probe...I carry all my gear in a Bounty Hunter bag...

Happy Hunting,

BH-LandStar
