Beginner Help

Hello all, I am a new Deus owner, and took it out for the first time today. I seemed to experience chatter all of the time and wondered if this was normal. I am also wondering what settings to use. I have been detecting for about 10 months, and previously used a Bounty Hunter Pioneer 505 which only had tones and no numbers. Any tips from your experience would be helpful.

You may have sensitivity to high. It will chatter some but good targets are much more obvious. Keep a dime in your pocket to remind yourself once in a while.

Always keep in contact with your dealer as they should be able to help you get going. I set all my customers up on how to get going with the XP Deus. The Basic 1 program is a great one to start out with. I wouldn't tweak to much till you get a good handle on it. That way when you make changes you can tell what you have done. Also don't make several changes at once. That can and will slow learning curve.

Thanks for the tips.

The Deus will spit and sputter sounds as you sweep the coil across the ground. It is always easier to have an someone with you that has some experience. They can tell what sounds to ignore. Most of the sounds you hear are rejected iron. One of the the bad habbits of the Deus is it sometimes sees large iron or round rusty iron as a good target. It will usually throw numbers from 97 to 99 on the the display. This is known as iron wrap around. The Deus is not the only detector to do this.

But as already mentioned keep a coin with you and scan it once in a while to learn a good repeatable tone. And stick with a basic program until you become more experienced. One good thing about the Deus is the stock programs are very good.

Try these settings and let us know if it still sputters:

- Turn it on in basic 1
- Lower sensitivity to 80
- put disc up to 30
- Set reactivity to 1
- Do a ground balance with the "pumping" function

You Deus should now be very quite in most ground/moderate emi areas. Let us know what these settings do. Someone will probably tell you these are not the "hottest" settings, but these settings will still get most of the goods.

Let me know if this quietes things down -Marc

Welcome to the Deus family Bill, it is a machine unlike the others. Some run them hot, some run them stable, some just run them as they are out of the box. It can and will run very well in all 3 set ups. Reset all Stephens settings to stock, put some items, good and bad out in your yard, and start practicing "listening" to the tones, like we talk about today on the phone, they will be different for most all items. You will start to pick up on the subtle changes it gives you before you know it. Taking it to the spots you have hit hard is a good and bad thing, Good, you know whats out there, bad, most of your easy finds will be gone already. give it a little time and you will start to pick up on it, as fast as you like to walk and swing, it will be a good match for you, just keep the coil to the ground.

All sound advice above. Robo is right, if any programs have been modified put them back to factory settings by using the restore feature. Remember, you are coming from an entry level detector to a high end unit and only having 10 months experience there is definitely going to be a learning curve for you. You will get it though. It just takes time. My first time out I turned my discrimination up to 40, this eliminated tin foil at the start. There was quite a bit of chatter for me too. It still might be noisy but I got used to it. Remember to keep it fun!!! Good luck.

Thanks for all the good advice. I will let you all know how it works.

ISM, what do you mean with "setting the threshold as it is explained in the manual?" You only set the threshold for non-motion modes. Could you please elaborate on what you meant?
