Beginner equipment advice

New member
I posted this in a different forum and someone suggested that I re-post it here.

Hello. I am new to the site & metal detecting. I have been thinking about getting into the sport/hobby for a while now and I am hoping that people here will help me out.
First off, I would like to use the detector in the water as well as on shore. I don't dive, but I would plan on wading. Being that I'm from Michigan, it would be fresh water. We camp a lot in the summer at state parks and I suspect that this is when and where the detector would get most of its use.
After all of my research, I am leaning toward the Tesoro Tiger Shark. I read that it works well in fresh water and pretty good on land. I gather that it also is better on gold than some of the other options in the price range. I feel that is important because lost jewelry is one thing that I hope to find.
Feel free to comment on that choice, but I also wanted some advice on the accessories that I will need to help me search. As I mentioned earlier, I have no prior experience.
Thanks.

is the one thing you hope to find? Well one of my partners hunts with a Shark and he likes it. But, he started out with an Excal. and it was stolen from his car.
So he picked up a Shark from e-bay for a good price.

What is your Budget and is detecting allowed in your State Park?

Well the shark would be towards the high end of what I was going to spend. As for being allowed to hunt in the parks, I know they let you in certain areas. Would I be disappointed with the shark on land?

Greetings midmich,

Since your a beginner you might want to know that I have been doing this in Michigan for 6 years and I have already cleaned out all the state parks. So you will be wasting your money on a detector.

OK, So I lied!!! A Tigershark is a good choice. I have a friend that has one and he finds lots of gold with it including small gold chains which I do not. (unless I see them since I dive!) It is a very well made machine. Also very good in Michigan is the Fisher 1280X. You would not ber disapointed with that machine either. I used one for a few years and had great success with it. Any machine you get I would get a 10" coil. You will be more happy with it once your arm builds up and you can swing it all day. You can cover more ground and in the state parks and other beaches there is not that many trashy beaches. Actually I have only found 2 in the 6 years I have been doing this here. Any further questions feel free to shoot them by me.
