Been noticing some talk on the Mr Bill modded classic III's and ive gotta say

there as close as perfect as you can get.I've been using modded classics for about 5- 6 years and there truly a great detector.I would get one here and there from one source or another and they all performed extremely well in my bad Georgia dirt.A buddy of mines father got one about a year ago and had it modified at surfscanner detectors and Mr. Bill commented on how deep it was too him on the phone.well to make along story short I purchased it from him about a month ago and I must say it is without a doubt the deepest detector I've ever owned( air test a quarter at 18 inches disc) and I've owned alot even the depth monster machines.you can't run this machine wide open about 3 O'Clock is all you can do or it will overload the machine and false.

One thing I've noticed on this classic is the disc is different than the others I've owned.on zero disc normal switch i still reject most small iron extremely well but it will accept a zinc penny on full disc? this one is the silver label model.

My other ones were the white paint models( the last ones made)and they were more chattery on zero disc normal an would pick up smaller iron but would get rid of zinc pennys.

Any one else notice this on a side note .

any how thanks Mr. Bill for a fine detector.

Mine doesn't go anywhere near that. I had the mod done a year ago. Turning mine all the way doesn't seem to make much difference. I can't believe there is that much difference.Rob

on a quarter. And i must say the idx's ( I had a couple) were about an inch or two below 14.Might be the meter robbing some of the power or somthing or it might of been the 2 I had???.

I believe the silver labels are the best ones to modify . to start with this one was a dead duck barely getting 9 inches on a quarter then when it came back it was unreal depth gain.

Thanks

Keith

Glad you got a good one , I always wondered if mine was all it could be. Mine is a IDX. I had mine done because I wanted deep. It just doesn't seem as deep as other people say theirs are. Rob

If you want to cover the shipping charges both ways, I would be more than willing to look at your detector free of charge, to see if everything is working OK.

Because of tolerance differences in the various units, some turn out a bit more sensitive than others.

I have noticed the results appear to be a tad better with the Classic III's.

[size=large]Pardon me if I take a little bow on this one. When the Classic series was first released I found them to be of solid construction (typical White's) and decent performers, but I didn't care for the coil selection, and I also didn't like a model that lacked a conventional All Metal mode. When they brought out the Classic III Plus, however, I was an immediate convert!

The Classic III Plus used the same housing and three 9V battery system as the other original Classics, but it featured an All Metal mode, a nifty toggle that allowed enhancement of the lower-end of the Discriminate range (Normal/Black Sand), and it came with the Blue Max 950 coil and shared all the Blue Max series of coils I already was using.

Now, this was a very good thing because the Classic III Plus was very quiet in operation when just rejecting iron nails, and with the 4" and 6

That's great info.

I'm like you though I mainly relic hunt and I just try to knock out small square nails. If I can get a machine to just click on small nails and sound off on a bent right angle nail's I'm pretty happy.

Most of the offerings in todays market seem to be geared towards target I.D's both visual and audible.Ive always felt you loose the little nuances you get with a single tone machine when you use a multi-tone or even at least a 2 tone.Nothing in I.D's can come close to a dead on discriminate circuit with a one tone in dense iron nail's those little spits and pops relay a lot of info the tone machines loose.and a visual I.D just cant keep up at all in a carpet of 150 year old nails.I know a lot of people swear by tones and theyare fine in a modern trashy setting where you cant dig it all but in an old forgotten mid 19th century site away from everything secluded in the deep woods if you choose to dig it all there is for sure some eye opening finds to be had intermixed in all the iron.

I just picked up a black max 5.3 and I'm going to hit some iron holes in the next few months and just see how this unit does against my other favorites (bandido 2 umax, fisher 1236-x2) in iron.

I usually just use the classic 3 for hunting deep targets in open woods .like minnie balls and such. running in all metal and checking out the deeper targets that do not register on the disc side. But with the way the disc is operating in the low range I'm going to see what its able to do in the nasty house site iron..

And to reply to your statement about whites making a new model. I would too like to see a model like the classic 3 already modded from the factory with the ground balance and threshold added and maybe jump the frequency up a little to help on the lower conductors. not too high like an mxt but more in the bandido range say 10-11 khz maybe 12. Get too high and depth suffers in bad ground or at least that's what I see in my area.I notice alot of the newer high frequency machines do great in air test and also the quick target response but drop off quickly in the ground.lower frequency and a little slower target response like the classic 3( when compared to the likes of the t-2, or mxt, and f-75, lobo st, an so on) equates depth.

The pro xl you mentioned is a fine machine although I cant say I ever put a whole lot of time on one.I just did'nt like the target response in disc. it is great in all metal and thats the way I left it when I used it and just watched the meter but in an iron hole thats going to be virtually impossible. But again the meter was fantastic on that unit.

thanks for your reply.

I just want to post that I sent my IDX to Mr. Bill and he checked it out and it was just fine. He called me today and I appreciate the time he took with me and my detector. The personal touch was just great. Thanks again. Rob
