I took a break because of the winter here in New York. but I'm looking to get back into the hobby pretty soon, I'm thinking of buying a Harbor Freight Pin-pointer for around 17 +Tax has anyone had any experience with these? i could use a pointer but i don't have a lot of money to spend. any help is greatly appreciated.

Here is a link to the item i am talking about

I started out with one before I upgraded to the Pro-Pointer. It actually does a little better than one might think. Try that one for a while and make sure you are again enjoying metal detecting, then graduate to the Pro-Pointer when you can. You'll never look back!
BTW - your avatar makes me dizzy!

Nothing wrong with the Harbor Freight pin pointer, It works pretty well for the money you pay.
I graduated to a Pro Pointer and it is a much better tool for the job. Get one when you can.

thanks for the help guys, really appreciated. i do plan on getting into it again, its just we had a very snowy winter here in new york so i wasn't able to go out detecting, plus without a car it makes things hard as well.

@Tulsa: lol sorry, if you would like i can make you one for your avatar, just send me a picture, then you can make everyone else who see's your posts dizzy as well haha

The Cen-Tec pinpointer works good for me. A great value at $17. Over in the Fisher F forum MarkCZ posted a short video of a simple mod he made to the Cen-Tec that makes a difference in the detecting range of the pinpointer. He just slid a metal ring or sleeve on the probe of the pinpointer and it about doubled the sensitivity of the thing. Video here:

Slick, isn't it?? I made a sleeve from a scrap of 1/2" copper pipe left over from a small plumbing job. Cut a slit in it so it could be expanded to fit over the probe. I set the sleeve so the pinpointer is at it's most sensitive to search a hole. Then when I want to close in on the target, slide the sleeve back toward the case to 'pinpoint' the target. Sure helps in finding tiny 'things' in the dirt.
