Beautiful Barber, Bullets And I Got BUSTED!!!

Well-known member
I went out early Sunday morning to get some detecting time in before having to finish my weekend chores. I went to an old school that I've been wanting to try for a while. Not a lot of signals but found a few old coins and one turned out to be one of the nicest Barbers I've ever dug and to top it off it's from New Orleans! I forget that old coins have this kind of detail because most all the ones I dig have seen lots of hands before being lost. I finished off there with a few wheats a couple of Mercs and 3 Shell President tokens from a spill.

Monday evening after the eclipse my buddy Micah and I hit a construction site that was a Civil War camp. We hunted here before on the first phase of construction and found a few bullets and buttons. This time around was about the same and we were able to save some more lead and Micah dug a nice knapsack hook. We decided to go back again last night and it ended up being a nice night for first for me. The first signal I got was a bullet and was a nice way to start. I dug a few pieces of trash and got another bullet signal on the Etrac but was surprised to see a tiny little thin piece of silver in the plug. I saw a faint detail of the eagle and I couldn't get water on it fast enough to confirm that I had just dug my first Capped Bust coin of any kind! I believe it's an 1832 but it's hard to see the last number. She's worn down to about nothing but I'm still grinning and replaying that moment in my head. I tried to get some good pics but it was getting too dark. I couldn't focus on detecting after that but managed to find a few more bullets before leaving. I cleaned everything up when I got home and I was thrilled to see two more first for me. One bullet is a Swage Base from being chucked in a lathe to cut the grooves and another is a .69 caliber French Triangle base! It's great to be able to save these relics because it won't be long before it's all covered up. HH-David

WOW! You are soooooo lucky to get on a construction site. Here in CA they are surrounded by fences before the ground is broken.

Hey Dave,

Great great finds and that dime is really nice. I found a 1916 barber last week that was in the same shape by far the nicest one I have ever found. Great job and a great hunt. And way to go on a bucket lister.

Awesome finds Dave! Nothing like getting Busted! I've only dug two of them so far and it is a treasured moment to be sure. That Barber is incredible as well and then having an O mint mark is just icing on the cake. I have never seen that triangle base 69 before. I want one now. lol A very cool piece of lead! I also dug my first swage base bullet this year as well. Congrats on finding yours and thanks for posting and sharing Dave. HH.

Ive also been blessed to find 2 bust dimes in my career and they are a rare find that will make you smile.. fine bunch finds there for sure...

That capped is awesome David, having never seen one in person, I am surprised how much smaller it is than the barber and merc dimes next to it. And by the way, the quality on that barber is amazing!! Very nice, Tim.

Congrats on the Capped Bust! Your finds are incredible and it's so great you got them before construction made the lost forever.

Absolutely outstanding find on that Capped Bust SD!
I have heard of one detectorist this far north finding one of those in my area.
They are here, FPD! I assume I'm not that far from you (I'm in Iowa) & I have found 7 Capped Bust silvers here.........

Congrat's, Sooper, on all your nice finds.........especially the Capped Bust half-dime!! It took me 25 yrs. to find my first!

Both you guy's are great hunters & I really enjoy your posts!

I'm thinking Large cents and bust coins are rarer than hen's teeth up there in MN and ND. Down here in southern WI they are relatively common. The area up there was settled considerably later than here. I suspect perhaps along some of the Ox-Cart trails would be best bet; about the only activity in the area when those coins circulated.

Yeah that stinks! They do that around here sometimes but most are open.

Thanks Mike! Yeah it's very lucky to get a few keepers before it's gone forever. The area out here is getting developed fast, it feels like a race to get in and save anything.
