Beating a dead horse to death...

This I know...my F70 needed updates was sent to Fisher and they paid the freight both ways and it returned with software updates, new coil and new battery hardware and works great and even at 50 percent sens. I can get over a foot air test on a quarter. SL will get you more depth, low minus threshold will get you less depth.
I do feel setting it back to factory presets sort of reboots the computer but have no technical knowledge to prove it so I would try same, Tony explains how he does it and I just pressed the buttons and had my wife turn on to complete the task as perhaps I don't have Tony's dexterity.
Do contact Fisher tomorrow morning relative Fishercustomerservice instructions and am sure Fisher will get to the problem be it the operator or a defective unit. Do remember although Fisher packed my F70 quite well for the return trip perhaps it was damaged in transit.
I can understand your frustration but once bought a Whites XLT new and it was dead out of the box and took two trips to Whites repair before it finally worked like it should so I have been there done that.
I think your posts are well meant but not proving anything and certainly won't get your unit working properly so make that call to Fisher tomorrow morning as many Fisher F70 owners doing well with their units are probably shaking their heads.
In addendum good luck and be sure to make a positive post once its working properly...

over a foot in DE mode at 50% sens? You must have one of those 'cream of the crop' units.

It would be nice to know if yours is the 'norm' or not.

Unfortunately.............it happens sometimes. Send your machine in, and it comes back unfixed or worse. While it Is unfortunate, and inconvienent, I'm 100% positive FT will make it right. I've had it happen too, and its never a pleasant experience. BUT, people are people, and make mistakes on occasion. Believe me, THEY dont want things like that to happen either! Its bad PR, and cost $$ everytime it happens. I really like the F70, and hope he gets it straightend out soon, so he can start enoying it again!
BTW, my F70 easily airtests a quarter at over a foot too, but I dont put a lot of stock in airtests. The REAL test is in the ground. AND, a negative threshold on the F70 is NOT a bad thing. :) Why do you think the default threshold setting is -3??? :fisher: Streak!

Streak,

Of course air tests are meaningless yet they are consistent for comparison, right?

Are you saying your F70 can detect a qtr in the DE mode at over a foot?

What is the sens setting you use to achieve this?

Thanks
Tony

I've been running it at sens 85, De speed, and 2F tones.( I get my best depth and most reliable signals in 2F or monotone) I occasionally use SL mode, but find you lose the tight signature I need in MY sites with SL.
Air tests are consistent for comparison ONLY if all the other variables are the same.
I've seen guys do airtests in the house, REAL close to major Rf sources, which affect depth big time.
I once saw a guy doing airtests, and wondering why he couldnt get any depth at all, only to see he had a big honking watch on the hand he was holding the rod with, inches from the coil. When he took the watch off (at my prodding), presto!!! The machine airttested just fine!
Sure, air tests are good for comparison (sometimes), but unless YOUR there witnessing them, god knows WHAT they (the "airtesters") are doing.
OH, and BTW, my aritests tonight for for the response to this post were with the 11" DD coil, but I fully expect the concentric stock coil to at LEAST match the airtest depth of the DD, if my test garden tests are any indication.

I said ((low)) minus threshold and -3 is not that and usually run close to that myself, but if you can bring it up closer to positive and still maintain stability it will give more depth.
Sorry didn't express myself better and said what I meant..-3 is fine under most circumstances but surely isn't a low - threshold..Thanks as I feel you clarified it well and feel its a defective unit myself but something as simple one bad AA battery out of the 4 can really cause problems.among other aspects...
Check the classifieds as now he is willing to trade it for a F70 that hasn't had updates. I wish Dennis all the luck in the world but feel he is attacking the problem the wrong way instead of letting Fisher check it out..

at 10 3/4" at 50 sens but will hit just over a foot at 80, that's with the threshold at -3, like to run at -3, so much quieter. I really like mine, will go deeper than my XT50 but like using the XT50 with 6"DD for jewelry in volleyball areas, playgrounds and in trashy areas, I'm satisfied with both machines. John

Especially after you have already sent it in for a repair. I can sympathize with Dennis in that respect. BUT, in the real world, (unfortunately), things like this happen, like it or not. NOBODY wants to spend money, and then have problems, but it happens with virtually everything you buy at one time or another. Your only talking about a 700$ purchase with a detector in most cases, and it IS just a hobby, so not much is lost except a little play time. Buy a $25,000 car and lose it for two weeks because of a major warranty repair and its MUCH more inconvienent! (Gotta put things in perspective!)
While I sympathize with Dennis for his troubles..........I'm positive FT WILL make it right, and he will be a happy camper again.
I know where YOU are coming from too Dan..and your point is well taken. Screaming and hollering usually doesnt get one anywhere, except maybe to an early grave due to heart failure  . A well thought out and concise call to FT will fix the problem LOTS quicker!!!! Streak!

Let me get this straight, you're still talking about an F70 right? With which coil are getting these depths on a quarter, the stock coil or a DD coil?

I have coins buried at that depth, and the F 70 hit's them with room to spare. Not just 1, F70, but all I have tested did.

Re-set detector to factory specs. Threshold at -3, sens. at 80. .25 US coin, responds with about 1.5" between ground & coil. At 99 sensitivity, I can lift the coil 4"/ 5".

There are a few little tricky things the F70 does when adjusting the Threshold settings. One may notice some performance changes by trying different settings for the ground your hunting in.

The F70 is one of the deepest units Fisher has, if not the deepest. When I read users only getting 5" 6", a flag goes up. Something is out of whack. It's either with the detector or the user. If it's the detector, it's under warranty. If it's the user, ???

Let me mention that my ground is mild. I get no bars showing on mineralization. GB's at 80.

It's a killer for picking coins out of trash too. Good solid hits on coins even when nestled in the aluminum junk sites.

Bill, is that with the stock 10" concentric coil? If so, I'll have to give it a more serious look while relic hunting this fall or get an 11" DD coil, since I didn't really see this kind of depth in the little bit of time I was playing with it. I setup it up for my wife to use, because I thought that I would be using the F75 I had, however I went through two F75s and both were unsuitable. Now that I have an XT-70 that's light enough for her to use as well I can use either machine, if we're hunting together. The thing that impresses me about the F70 over the F75 is the stability being better. I'll have to run some tests in all metal and see if it can equal the XT-70 for seperation.

Hi Canewrap

This with the stock coil. It was just as it came out of the box. I haven't tried it on a air test in the shop, but I didn't feel I needed to.

There are a few un-mentioned things going on in side the F70 that are not mentioned in the owners manual. Now that I said this, I really don't know exactly what they are. I do know one has to play around with the threshold setting a bit. The threshold circuit is closely tied in with the receiver sensitivity.

I haven't had time to use it in all metal, or try it in any separation test. The coins I have in my test garden are not set up for separation testing. I just have a few very deep buried coins for testing maximum detection depth. I mainly use it for PI units I work on.

On a slightly different note, I have a friend in Virginia that is a well known, respected detectorest that has been using a F70 lately. He phoned me this morning to tell me the super results he's having with the F70, and the 11" DD coil combination. The soil there is down out right nasty mineralized, very few detectors can work there at all . In his phone call to me this morning, he was speaking of 10", 12" deep buttons found. So if your going to the 11" DD coil on your F70 I suspect you will be happy with it.

EXPECIALLY with the F75 11" DD coil, and in De mode. I mean....its not even a close contest. I've hunted side by side with them, and everytime I find a good one in junk,,,,,,,,,,,,I let them come over and check it with the X70. EVERYTIME they pronounce it "iron", but it isnt!
If push cames to shove, I'll STILL use my F75,,,,,,,,,,,,,but the F70 comes in at a REAL close second!
Like Mr Bill says, the F70 will easily get a 12" quarter in the ground, with a bit of room to spare. its a GREAT little machine!!
