beaten to death subject batteries for the Excal

I had an idea that I needed to bounce off someone, suppose I wanted to discharge my excal battery so that it would have a full charge for each trip out. I have the nicads and was thinking about using something that draws 9 volts from a DC power source (like one of those PC cooling fans). My question is, in theory could one run the 9 volt device to discharge the 12 volt nicads and will the 9 volt device stop working when the voltage gets below 9 volts?

I know I could probably pick up a discharger, but am toying with this idea.

Thanks for the help?

Paul

Difficult to say without doing some testing on the fan or having some specs. It should take the form of a simple electric motor in which case it will probably continue to run at a reduced speed below 9V - exactly when it would stop running who knows. I bought a charger for 9V batteries - it has a discgarge function. Once the battery is discharged it auto switches to charge. This thing was very cheap - I bet you could pick up something similar. I used to discharge RC batteries using resistors or a suitable lightbulb. A quick calculation using ohms law will give you a suitable resistor value to draw a safe current from the battery - a trip into tandy or radio shack should provide the necessary connectors and resistors. Failing that - a low wattage bulb should do the trick.

Paul, excuse my ignorance, but can't use just leave your Excal on and let them run down that way?

(Where in MA are you? I'm in a 'burb NE of Boston.)

They come with the new pack now, but there is none available for replacement so you can have a extra one. I was told Minelab need all the ones they make right now for the new Excal II, but replacements will be available later.

I stand corrected, Thank You. Do you know if the new NIMH pack for the Excal2 will fit on the Excal1, Rick? That would be a godsend as well as saving me from having to buy a new NiCad pack and then swap out the batteries with NiMH's from a battery supplier.

Shouldnt the new Excal 2 NiMH Batteries last longer than the Excal 1 batteries. I am only on my first charge on the new Excal 2 so far but I havent hunted that much with it yet. Also, can you recharge early after a long hunt and it wouldn't have any memory effect with the new batteries. I dont know much about these new batteries. Thanks, Bob

Think I got it. I tried a 12volt PC fan and it only drains the battery to 6 volts. This will allow me to drian without having the detector on. Should help to extend the life of these nicads.

My excal will sound sometimes and at other times you can faintly hear it It works but it doesn't .anyone have any suggestions ? other than sending it to Minelab. and if I do send it to Minelab how long would it take to get it back ?
