Bear charging incident this past summer

I suppose it was Calabash Digger's post on the Copperhead Snake incident that prompted this. He was extremely fortunate the snake decided to go in the opposite direction. That snake had ample time and many opportunities to bite CD. Glad you are still with us CD!!

Onto my encounter.....

I have been debating for the last several months on whether to post this. This past summer I was hunting in an area (several acres in size) that is surrounded by homes and businesses. I have hunted this place hundreds of times and has always been a very serene and relaxing place to hunt. (especially after a difficult week at work) I see all sorts of small wildlife but never in a million years would I have dreamed of coming face to face with 3 full-grown Black Bears. It still brings back terror just thinking about the incident and I am truly fortunate to be alive. That day, I truly believed it was "game over" for me. There is a tape in my head that keeps rewinding and playing specifically the part where one of them charged me. All that I will add is that I will never forget that awful low-tone grunt, the charging of the bear and the few power "sweep maneuvers" it took with its front paws. I now know what the feeling of having "rubber leg" syndrome is all about.

This whole situation occurred within a matter of several seconds.

It is my belief Devine Intervention played a part here. This one bear seemed to have the thought, the idea and determination to wipe me off the face of the earth. I do not have any other explanation for its sudden stop in mauling me.

Please be aware and be safe out there.

You need to carry pepper spray ELP... those bears love a little spice on their meal,lol... im sorry couldnt help myself.. they say black bear attacks are rare but i do recall a guy over in Jersey being killed by one a few years ago.. if they are hungry enough or there are cubs around things can go bad quick... sorry for your mental trama, really sucks when you get stuck half way between fight or flight and aren't sure what to do.... i suppose you could have lifted your detector over your head and yelled at them in an effort to intimidate them or layed down and played dead.. i dont think those bears would have messed with me as they would have been repelled by the load of scat in my drawers... glad you got outta that jam unscathed... you probably should have reported it to the game warden though so they could warn the public...

lol I got a good laugh BHPA. No offense taken. I'll try to remember to bring the salt and pepper  I can laugh at this now but I still get an anxious feeling when I think about that bear rushing me. So easy to get caught up in the moment of looking for that next great find and not realizing where we actually are. We have to keep in the back of our mind that we are hunting "natures backyard".
