Beaches of New Jersey

Hi, I'm retired and never tried beach hunting, would like to give it a try. What beaches in NJ allow you to metal detect when the life guards leave, and if they do which ones require a permit after hours? Are most of the beaches freindly?

Hi Poppy2,
Never have detected New Jersey but have been looking at some really awesome videos on you tube with some folks who do with allot of good finds. You might want to check them out.
TRIPLE-SSS

Yes you can hunt the Jersey beaches all year. Life guards don't care and one even told me where a woman lost a gold ring. (didn't find it)

Just make sure you aren't hunting areas where detecting is not allowed. These can include wildlife preserves or historic sites ( for instance, on Long Beach Island, you can't hunt the areas around the light house or the bird sanctuary in Hologate).

Other than these types of areas, hunting is allowed day or night. Just be aware some beaches charge to get on them during the day.

Best time to go is after 5:00 PM, when low tide is 2-3 hours away. You don't have to deal with most of the crowd and the tide is going out. Way less junk in the wet sand and suds.
