Beachdetecting with the GTA1000

Eric

New member
Went to the beach with some friends and my wife and took my fisher 1236x2 which does a good job on the salt. Last week I managed to put a brand new lcd screen in the garrett 1000 so it looks like new now. While I started off with the 1236 my wife and her friend took the garrett. I told them to stay on the dry sand because the detector would go bonkers on salt. My thoughts were wrong:surprised:

I still can't understand that there was no falsing at all on the wet sand. I did not even turn down the sensitivity [3 cursors down usually] It worked just like a dream and my wife find a golden pendant with this beauty. My wife is 3 pregnant and that starts to show.....

Finally my wife was going to catch crabs with her friend and I took the green machine away from her to use it myself:lol:. Metalhead, did you take the garrett 1000 with this 5x10 DD coil to the beach before?

I really like the gta1000 although the depth is not that great, but good enough for most kinds of detecting.

Thanks for looking!

HH. Eric . Holland

Hi Eric,

Looks like you have a great day on the beach:)
My advice: Don't give your wife a detector anymore, before you know she is addicted too!!! hehe
Congrats on the gold. I've never expect the Garrett would be that great on the wet salt beach. How many :pulltab: did you find today?
Next time I want to join too. When we are going to practise again???

Regards,
Bas

Could be the DD coil but I also tried many other DD's and they still did not work. Maybe it is the DD in combination with the freq?

Thanks, Eric.

Enjoyed the photos. Best wishes for you and your wife and your treasure hunter to be. BTW, cool, and appropriate pendant!

Chris

Hey Eric, congrats on havin' a baby on the way. That's awesome! Yeah, I used the GTA 1000 with that 5"x10" double D search coil as my main detector for the beach and elsewhere for a few years. That "Beach" mode has a salt elimination mode although it is not advertsed as such. The later machines like GTP1350, GTI 1500, GTI 2500 all have a "Salt Elimination" feature that can be enabled in either discrimination mode. The older units like GTA 1000 and CXlll have a "Beach" mode that utilizes a salt elimination feature that aids in use at salt water beaches. One downside I noticed about the beach mode or salt elimination mode is that it would reduce the detector's sensitivity on lower conductivity metals(like gold), so use it sparingly. That double D search coil certainly does help in the salt or otherwise mineralized ground.
Nice pics!:clapping:Looks like a fun day!:thumbup:Thanks for sharing!:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

For your replies and wishing me well with my wife's pregnancy. Hehehehe I guess my quiet days are gone soon! Metalhead, did you ever used the gta1000 in the the All Metal mode? Did it give a big depth advantage?

Thanks, Eric.

Yeah, the only time that I would use the All Metal Mode was when I was in a "dig it all" mood. I do that alot sometimes, just dig everything. I don't believe it gained any more depth compared to the disc modes. Audio Boost helps, but it'll run your batteries down quicker.:detecting:Now, when Garrett's addedd that PowerMaster feature, Wow, did it add depth. I would regularly dig small coins and rings at nine inches with that old PowerMaster unit and 5"x10"DD. Man, I wish I still had that thing. Fun to play with. Well, I guess I have enough toys as it is for now.:biggrin:Happy Hunting!:)

Yes, I thought already that the increase of depth was not all that when I tried it. Oh well.... it's still a fun detector and might become handy for those sites that dont require a depth demon.

HH. Eric.
