Beach trip with the GT - Finds & Questions

Here is a finds report and there are a couple of questions at the end......

So 3rd time out since I got my new Sovereign GT - and yet another impressive performance. The beaches in my area are fairly prolific in terms of people but that also means there are more people detecting, the coin finds are certainly not what they used to be 10 years ago, largely due to the economy I think and also we could do with a week (make it a year please) of blazing hot sunshine.......... Can't complain though as I just can't stop finding rings at the moment....

A typical night hunt for me - dry sand and then in the early hours of the morning switch to wet sand hunting as the tide goes out. Had a promising start in the dry stuff with a few coins but once again the area had certainly been detected heavily over the weekend, I have years of knowledge of this beach so can tell pretty quickly. However its not a disaster as the days weather had been ok (not good but ok!) so the days drops were there and what everyone else had missed. Have watched other people detecting this beach area, I am always amazed at how fast they go - never seen anything like it in my entire life, the amount of stuff they miss is incredible.

Settings were DISC - 0, Notch - 0, Sens - just before 12 - Iron Mask 'ON' and I put my 'luck' setting on high...

And talking about what other people miss.......... dry sand find about 7 inches down........another gold ring.......

Onto the wet sand as the tide starts to go out - sand shifts mean there is more of a slope than usual, not such a good sign. A toe ring was found almost instantly, thought it was gold at first - need to explain that my head torch is a red low light so that anything silvery under the red light in the darkness is going to look gold. Switch my light over to white light and can see its silvery, but not silver... Junk. Now my low tide hunting went completely down hill, I could hear barking...... headphones on I couldn't tell how far away. Ignored it for a while but the barking was incessant... and getting louder... the threshold hum was becoming overwhelmed by the noise, turned around and a dog is about 15 feet away. This was about 3am - nice looking dog, no owner. He followed me and barked away - a lost dog.... not an angry dog I was not concerned about that but the noise he made was incredible - when he eventually sauntered off right at the lowest tide time there was another noise..... big boat coming in...... oh hell... Big boats should not come by at low tide so obviously this one has a problem and the waves it caused meant that I lost about 6ft of prime hunting ground. Still as I did high tide mark another ring popped up - not silver though but a nicely crafted ring nevertheless. Bumped into the dog again later - still barking............he seemed scared no chance of me getting a lead on him even after giving him a chocolate bar. Coming away from the beach a car pulls up, driver asks have I seen his dog......... told him exactly where he will be and that was my good deed done..

Another good night - and I was hearing the tone differences much better this time.

So my finds for the night were.....

You're doing well with that machine. Keep at it. And yes, get rid of the coil cover in particular if you water hunt. The water/dirt/sand slushing around inside the cover can cause wierd things to happen.

I now use bed liner spray on all my coils. Great stuff. And I have the black hip mount bag and there is no problem fitting my GT or Elite inside.

Thanks for that - I have ordered some bed liner today.......... little more difficult to buy in the UK so have the tin of van bed liner paint rather than the spray version, same stuff though. Repair job done on the arm strap. Now working on designing a hip mount cover that actually fits.....

nice finds.. looks like your having way too much fun.. about the coil in the water question.. from my experience i can tell you that some times when waves pass over the coil the theshold will rise and fall as the wave recedes,, .happy huntin to ya..

nice finds.. 4 ring day! your doing really well since buying your GT (I see your post on another forum). better than me even!. Ive only managed 3 gold since april and thats a few hundred hours at least!

btw you can kill a dog giving it chocolate.. seriously look on the net about it. chocolate makes em ill.. too much is toxic and can kill them!

Yes I was quite happily posting on another forum (a UK one), unfortunately the attitude of certain people made me stop - under a general question I was told "if you are hunting for modern coins then you really shouldn't be metal detecting" - and that was from a senior poster on the forum, it seems there is even snobbery in the hobby of metal detecting!!

Its certainly a lucky streak with rings at the moment - partly down to years of working out the tidal & current systems - partly down to the GT making life very easy!, but 'luck' also has had its say I am sure - your time will come.........and mine will eventually subside (I just hope not too soon!).

Yes, way too much fun.... I have read that about the surf having an effect, but in this case the threshold isn't the problem - just when a target is located the noise is sounds horrible, not a great problem but an irritating one...and will then persist on dry sand afterwards as well until the coil cover is removed and cleaned. The bedliner paint has arrived, the first coat looks good - so will give it a test (but I don't think I have time for a proper hunt this weekend).
