Beach stops along the east coast question:

Stogger

I'm taking a trip to Florida in Nov., but I wanted to spend a day on the way there and back to visit a beach for some metal detecting. Some places I had in mind are St Augustine Fl, Myrtle Beach, Matansas Inlet, Fl. Does anyone off hand know if metal detectors are allowed on beaches in Florida or SC? In Virginia, no problem.

SC no problem unless otherwise posted (think state parks, etc). Myrtle good for sure (I have hunted there several times).

Fla is complicated on the Treasure Coast, so i'll defer to a resident on that one.

There are no restrictions on detecting any of the beaches in South Carolina. Some of the State Parks may want you to get a permit from the park manager. Myrtle Beach gets hundreds of thousands of visitors every year and a lot of them bring metal detectors to the beach with them and there are also a lot of locals that metal detect. But one never knows till you put a coil over the sand.

I find a considerable amount of competition here in the Charleston area. I have had five other guys that I could see working one of the beaches. But once in a blue moon I do find something nice.

I checked on the law in Florida...

You cannot go MD'ing in the water on some beaches (Example: Palm Beach). While you CAN go on the beaches, you must first get permission from the beach manager (Yellow Pages)

You CAN MD all over areas that are not under lifeguarding. If lifeguard is present... no MD'ing. No MD'ing in the sea grass.

Hope this helps.
