Beach question

Confused

New member
I went to the beach today. Low tide hunting in the water and wet sand line. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!! Well, except for a weight and a quarter. I was watching my sensitivity, I was running it at Auto +3, and it was at 20 - 13 average. I walked around for about an hour or so, and noticed that the sensitivity reading dropped to 8 - 1. What do I do with that? What is that from? I turned my CTX off and restarted it, but it still stayed around 8 - 1 to 4.

Ok forgive me if I am lost. He posted this problem in the beach and scuba section and I said to come here to get the answer becasue there were plenty of great people here with the CTX3030 and he would get more help. 49 people read his post and no responses? Please, can somebody shed some light on his inquisition? Thanks all.

i dont have a clue,,, so far all i know is auto is the way to go from what ive read.. id throw a quarter down in the water when its reading that low and see what it sounds like.... check out beach hunting question in classroom section. goodluck HH

We might be able to shed some light on the matter if we knew more about the settings you were using. For example, what was your Search mode? If it was one of the defaults, did you make any changes to it? What was the separation mode?

Hello Digger, I am using the Beach Mode with no changes, except Auto +3. It's strange, I was in the towel line, dry sand and it wasn't like that at all. It ran 23 /18 most of the time. So I wonder if it is something in the water that makes it like that. I should've threw a quarter down just to see what the reading was. I wonder how much I missed out there.

Beach mode is a decent place to start. It has 50 tone CO with low trash separation. GB is not implemented and Deep is ON. Discrimination Patterns are similar to those in the Coin Search mode.
When I had the CTX on the gulf last winter, there was a substantial difference in operation between the dry sand and wet sand in regard to stability and TID accuracy. I could set up for dry sand and hunt the dry sand for hours. And I could set up for wet sand and hunt in the water's edge for hours. I just couldn't expect one group of "settings" to work well when I wandered back and forth from wet to dry to wet to dry etc. Like you suggested, the Auto Sensitivity dropped substantially when I hit the water. I know the manual says to not run Auto Sensitivity on the beach. But I had no problem running with Auto much of the time. At least not in the dry sand. The areas I hunted were not necessarily highly mineralized with what we know as magnetic mineralization. But the wet sand, combined with salt water and soil made them very conductive. What I did in those wet areas was switch to Ground - Coin mode and implement the ground balance functionality. Then I would switch to manual Sensitivity and push it until it started to chatter... then backed if off a click or two. I hunted parallel to the water's edge and didn't wander back and forth from wet sand to dry sand. When I got done in the water and went back upon dry sand, I'd flip back to Auto Sensitivity and disable the GB. I also turned Deep OFF both on dry sand as well as in the water. I won't guarantee that these suggestions will solve your problem. But give them a shot and let us know if you see any improvement. HH Randy

Thanks Randy. I'll do that and let you know.
