beach problems:shrug:

Ok...dry sand having no problem, stock 950 coil, run the gain around 9 up to +1, disc about 3, c/j mode, gb switch in salt. Problem is when i get near the water lots of false readings and the threshold becomes chattery(only word i can think of). and i also noticed when i run the ground balance in track it usually runs smoother than in salt mode, im really confused!!!!

wow i am waiting for a reply to this because it may make a difference to me on wether to get an mxt or not ,some people say the mxt is terrible in wet sand ,i hope there will be answer here :rage:

I use the MXT in wet sand on beaches around San Diego with no problems, I use the 6 X 10 DD coil and put it in the salt mode no chatter. When I get up on the dry sand area I switch it back to trac mode. Beaches have a high mineral content, so you need a coil that will cancel it out. I hope this helps................

ill be honest, i used to hunt with a fisher cz-7a pro and found it alot easier to run on the beaches. never had a problem in wet sand or anywhere in that matter. i do like the mxt for dirt hunting, seems like it gets good depth. ive just about giving up hunting wet sand with it tho, dry sand is no problem.

On the salt beaches in Texas I did better with the DD coils. I used the 6x9 Whites and the 10" Excelerator. I ran in Relic center postion. It all depends on the beach, Florida is not the same as California. Rob

I have been hunting with an MXT on salt water beaches for 5 years now. I even bought a pi detector thinking it would be better, but with no disc it was too much of a pain to use. I sold the pi and stayed with the mxt.

The problems you (and anyone new to an MXT) are the same as I had , but I have learned to use it and I love it. Found enough stuff on local beaches to pay for it 8 times over.
Try the following tricks, steps I use and be patient.
Settings= c&j, track to salt , slight thresh hold hum and gain at 6-7, disc at 2, 6x10 dd coil

1) Try to remember that max gain is not always best. I generally have my gain set between 6-7 in wet sand.
You will benefit more from a lower gain than trying to run high gain. I have found items up to 8" down with these gain settings.

2) When you step onto wet sand remember to pump your coil up and down several times on clean sand till it quiets down. If it does not quiet down REDUCE the gain till it does.

3) If when walking around it starts falsing again pump the coil on clean sand and continue on, or reduce the gain again.

4) Try not to go from wet to dry and vice versa. If you go into dry set trac to ground and gain can be a lot higher if you wish.

5) A disc of 2 will result in you digging a lot of foil, but if you go higher you will disc out rings. Also dig every repeatable sound you hear. I have found an engagement ring that hit on 16- foil that was worth $1600.00. Digging on a beach is generally easy and takes little time with a long handled scoop so remember dig every target!

6) Keep your coil brushing the surface every inch you are above the surface results in a loss of depth.

7) When you can do it , get yourself a 6x10 dd coil it will reduce falsing considerably.

I hope I gave you a bit of insight to using you MXT on beaches I would not use anything else, and i have tried many brands .

Good Luck

All has been said with this.

The 6x10 DD makes a big difference. What I prefer in trashy, iron littered beach areas is:
trac to salt, balance over a clean spot (checked by p/p) and then switch to lock.
This way the disc and the auto GB won't affect one another and the detector runs more stable.

Good Luck & HH

Thanks for the info, i used my MXT on dry sand and some wet last year and found similar to what you had. Thanks for the info and good luck beach hunting. Gerry
