i have been using an mxt about 4 months ,when i am at the beach i have normal readings when high up the beach ,but when i get down to the water line i get very eratic readings .i have found some great stuff at the beach but would like to get closer to the surf .no problems in fresh water .

eney help on this would be great .THANK YOU!

Have you tried putting it in the salt mode, If so you might want to get a coil for high mineral soil that will also help. I use the 6 X 10 DD coil and in the salt mode when I hunt the water line on the west coast and haven't had any trouble.

thanks for the info ,i have tryed the salt mode but not a different coil other than the 950 eclips that it came with . i have been to whites in sweet home oregon and asked them about it while i was there ,they siad this coil SHOULD work .havenot had alot of time to really mess around with it .

i will check into the other coil .
what type of depth do you get with the 6x10 dd coil.(in the sand)

Dry or wet to me it seems about the same 6 to 8 inches that is with the 6 X 10 DD. But there is some coils for mineral soils that will give you more depth, give Kellyco a call they will lead you in the right direction .:whites:

MXT is not good for beach. For this reason I had to buy also Dual Field, Wader and Pulse.

MXT is for park.

That's your opinion, The MXT is for allot more then just the park. It's right up there with the best prospecting detectors, its one of the best relic detectors. and a darn good coin and jewelry detector, and I've had very good luck with it at beaches.. And most of this type of hunting isn't done in the park! :whites::starwars:

Good!

Thank you!

I am still learning!!

:nopity:

MICRO : check out my finds from the beach on the metal detecting forum .(PIRATES) most of these have not been very deep .or near the salt water.
i have had good luck in parks ,but have also had good luck with prospecting and finding gold in hi iron concentrated pockets in a river near where i live.am trying to get better performance and depth .i know there are more coins to be found . plus much more .

Jog,
the MXT is a good detector. I don't know how long you have had yours and you also didn't say where in the country you are using it at the beach. I have used mine at the Texas beaches and I know they do well in Florida. I had had no trouble not only in the wet sand but also with the coil submerged. This is because these salt beaches have fairly low mineralization. There are black sand beaches where the MXT will not work very well in the wet sand. It is a good beach hunter but not as good as some dedicated beach machines..

DD coils will work better at the salt beaches. I have used the 6x10 but I will be testing a 10" Excelerator coil this week. I believe it will do everything the 6x10 will do and I have heard from knowledgeable guys I know that I can expect 1 1/2 to 2" more depth than with the 6x10. I'll let you know a little later. Rob

I see in the park in rainy weather with 6x10 DD I got quarters from up to 5``-6`` deep on MXT. Is it normal?

So, with excel it will be 7``-8`` deep? And what about SEF? Even deeper than excel?

It is very important as all parks/beaches here in NY are hunted out to apocalipsical death, and only hope can be going deeper than competition. The closer to China - the better.

It could be normal, it depends on your soil. The 6x10 is a good coil. It is light, it fits into small spaces and has good side to side separation. In my soil it is not as deep as the stock coil. My stock coil just out does it for depth. I think I may have a better coil soon. Rob

I have been using an MXT on the beaches here in Mass for 4 years now.

Here it was I do and have great success with.........................................

#1- I use a 6x10 eclipse coil.
#2- No discrimination, in c/j mode, ground set to salt.
#3-I start with gain on 9 and pump the coil up and down on "wet sand" until it quiets down. If it does not quiet down I decrease the gain until it does.
#4- As I go along it may get chattery again, if it does I pump the coil again until it quiets down. I even may have to reduce gain again.

I use this method religiously and it works great. The thing to remember is that less gain is some times best , especially in wet sand or highly mineralized ground. The MXT is a high gain unit and if the gain is set too high You will just mask out good targets with all the chatter and falsing You will hear. I found targets with a gain of 7 up to 8 inches deep in wet sand with no problems. As a matter of fact I found a 9 stone diamond ring, 18k at around 7 inches in wet sand, plus many more gold rings and jewelry as well as lots of clad.

I have tried a PI unit, true it was deep, but with no disc or id it was truly a pain to use, dug more hair pins than I can count. Plus the fact that a PI is about useless in dry sand, I dug a billion holes in dry sand, mostly all junk targets. The MXT goes from wet to dry with no problems and is much more efficient, in my own honest opinion.

Hope I helped a bit and happy hunting.

Well said slapshot, I agree with you.:clapping:

has anyone tried beach hunting in prospecting mode with the gain pumped up and at full hypersat (and a DD coil)? My second year prospecting up in Alaska's arctic circle I hunted with an MXT w. 6x9" DD at full gain and H.sat. The first year I used a Fisher CZ6a w. 10.5" coil and had to run it in salt mode. A lot of other detectors were rendered basically inoperable by the ground there. I haven't done much beach hunting, but figure that, since a lot of people run in zero, or very low disc., when doing so, the iron 'grunt' could be put to good use. ..Willy.
