Beach Max and others who are into surfhunting........

..........water hunters. I'm thinking of taking the jump to an Excalibur 800. But I have a few questions and need some honest answers, please. What is the proper sweep speed for this detector....i'm told by some people that it operates well only at a " snails pace".....is this true??? Also is the iron disc really as good as claimed?? While I like my PI PRO's depth it is just becoming impractical to use with all the iron around. Finally will the Excalibur give me depth near that of my PI PRO??? How close is it depthwise in comparison? I'm on the West Coast and I hunt mainly the dry sand parts of the beach, as well as the wet sand areas but I do not go under water. Is there a hipmount option for this unit that works well?? Thanks to everyone who takes the time to reply!!!!

Unless you have a physical condition that will not allow you to swing the 10 inch coil, I would opt for the Excal 1000. Lots of ground to cover and every additional inch will help. Also a little better depth with a 10 inch coil. Not that much weight difference and the performance is worth it.

As for sweep speed, I hunt mainly in the water where you can't sweep fast anyway. As for wet sand, I swing at a normal pace and don't have any problem. I have seen others go down the beach swinging like they are at a track and field event and wonder why they never find anything. This is with all brands of detectors, not just the Excal.

YES! the iron discrimination is as good as the say it is. It is one of the BEST features of the Excals.

I think you will be surprised that the Excal will be deeper than your PI Pro, but I will let others that use the PI Pro answer that one.

I Will not hip mount for any reason. The wires are the weak part of the Excal and putting that kind of strain on them is asking for expensive repair problems. Instead of hip mounting I would look at one the of the many straight shafts on the market. I switched to one and what a difference on balance.

Of all of the water machines I have owned over the years, the Excalibur has been outstanding.

VERY IMPORTANYIf you order one of the new ones MAKE SURE it has the NEW YELLOW Koss headphones. A much needed improvement over the blue ones still being shipped.

Sorry about being a long post but I hope it helps as I know it is an expensive investment.

I have A Whites PI and An Excalibur 1000. Both machines are excellent for their price range. If you can afford the Excal then go for the 1000.

I had the PI First and have found more gold with it in the first month than I have with the Excalibur in the first month. I had to send the PI off for warranty work. It leaked around the headphone connection while on vacation. I already had the bug so I opted to purchase an Excalibur also.

The Excal battery died on me yesterday so I switched back to the PI. First noticeable difference is swinging the two detectors. Out of the box the PI is light and well balanced. Pushing it thru the water is very easy except for the loop popping up on you. They make a plastic piece thingy that keeps the loop stable to fix this.

The Excal is like swinging a shovel when I first got it and even after switching to a straight shaft it still swings like a two by four in the water.
Depth on the PI is really good. I dig a ton of stuff with the PI that is really deep. I don't seem to find as many really deep targets with the Excal. Don't get me wrong the Excal will pick a penny up at 10 inches it just seems that the PI makes me dig even deeper. I may just notice it more because I dig SO MUCH JUNK that
