Beach hunting

Now that the weather is warmer, has anyone done any Sandy beach salt water detecting? I'm planning a trip to Topsail Island, NC at the end of the month and plan to give the Racer a workout in the dry & wet sand. Any tips for a Midwesterner?

When the water gets up to your neck turn around. From what I have seen the Racer should do well. Be sure to report back. I have a night hunt coming up and I want to know if the Racer will do the job.

The Racer is Great on the beach. Wet salt sand is no problem for it. Just use beach mode. I'm in nj and can run the sens in the 90s in the wet sand using beach mode with standard coil. The machine runs flawless and goes deep in the wet sand. Good luck on your trip.

That's great to hear! My new scoop should arrive tomorrow and then about a week Iater I'll make the14 hour drive with a van full of kids. I will report back with my results.

Have a ball down there FTB. Hope to see some gold in your future

Just got back from three days detecting So. Cal. Beaches with the Racer. In beach mode, preset gain and Disc. it was a little noisy in the wet sand but I did find a few targets down to about 6". In the dry sand the three tone worked great with the gain up to 95. Dug coins down to a depth of about 8" and a small Lions International hat pin at about 8". Have been using the Gold Bug Pro and then F19 in the dry recently. Racer will now be my go to dry sand detector as well as for ghost towns and Railroad sidings. (was using an 11" standard coil)

One other thing I noticed is that the Racer was giving me a false signal at the end of each of my swings to the left. Then I realized that the detector was picking up my sand scoop that I carry in my left hand. The Racer has so much gain that it would hit my scoop at better than 2 feet like my PI units would. I had to make sure I choked up on the scoop's handle and cut my swing just a little bit short on the left side.

but it's not from a sand scoop. They don't work too well in ghost towns and similar sites I prefer to hunt. Instead, it's when I sweep too close to a.. my aluminum cane or b.. the carbon plate in my prosthetic shoe. Oh, to be 'normal' again.

Best of success on the beaches!

By the way, I hunted a very salty dry and very salty wet area with the racer in 3-Tone and didn't have a problem with the wet salt conductivity because I adjusted the ID Filter, as done in the Beach mode, to eliminate it, much the same as I have done for years with a variable Disc. control to handle low-conductive wet salt. I've only headed to the Oregon coast once since I got the Racer, but it's nowhere near as 'salty' as where I hunted.

Also, I usually do not use coil covers. 1.. There's no real need to because coils shouldn't be worked on the ground surface, and 2.. They can add extra weight on the front-end of the rod when there's no need, and 3.. There might be a possibility of getting some form of' contamination' between the coil ands cover that could cause problems.

Monte, I know what you're saying. Used to be I could detect all day. Now about four hours on the beach and I need a break. Like a 20 hour break. This past week, drove to So Cal and hunted three or four hours Tuesday, four hours Wednesday, took off Thursday, hunted three hours Friday and headed home to AZ. Feet were killing me the whole 6 hour drive home. Oh to be young again.

I'm really looking forward to beach hunting. Coming from a sea of corn & beans, it will be a great change of scenery. Of course I dream of making wonderful finds but I think I'm mostly excited to be able to dig targets using my new scoop and not having to kneel down to do it. The only rule my wife gave me was to be home for dinner each night. Let the hunting begin!!! One week to go.
