Beach Hunting

New member
I have been detecting for about a year now, and I purchased the CTX this winter. Since I started, I have always been interested in beach hunting but have not done it much. My parents live near the beach in VA, so this is the year of the beach for me, now that I have a waterproof detector. I recently bought a T-Rex scoop and I am ready to hit the surf. I have a few questions though. First, is it true that I have a better chance of finding gold and such in waste high (or deeper) water rather than wet/dry sand? Second, do you avid beach hunters always use the tide to decide when you will be hitting the beach? Third, I am imcluding a picture of the beach I will be hunting, it is not huge or always packed, but it is a bit upscale and old. Where would you guys start? Thanks for any help at all.

If I had a CTX I would put on the large coil and start at the edge of the dry sand and carefully and slowly cover every square inch of the dry sand. What is in the wet sand/water will be constantly moving and will come and go, but what is in the dry sand is where it is, and the CTX will go deeper than many vlf detectors. When you have done the dry sand to death, rest up for a few days and then hit the water. Re waist deep v wet sand....treasure is where you find it. HH and have a ball.:)

Hi Nolan,
I have found most of my gold in the water. If the sea has a big tidal range it's tricky to know where to hunt. If there's not much tide then wading is great. Look where the people lay and sit, you will find pocket losses. In the water you will find rings and jewellery that has fallen off cold slippery fingers, or necklaces that have been broken or come over their necks.
You either find recent losses (stuff lost over the last few days) or suff that has been lost a long time ago. It all depends on the movement of the sand. If the beach has been sanded in (more sand arrived) you will only find very recent losses. Everything else will be to deep. If the beech has been losing sand then you will find recent and old losses. It helps to know the beech, so you can tell what the current conditions are.
In the water when you start to find coins and cheap jewellery that is where the good stuff will be. If you are only finding light aluminium and ring pulls then the sand is high. Places where people enter the water (near the sun loungers) often is good, as are laces people play on the beach, beach volley ball court etc. wet sand is where older stuff can be found, the soft dry sand at the top of the beach for more recent losses. A pin pointer can make it a lot quicker and easier to locate the target in wet sand especially. Good luck mate :)

While I have found both gold and silver rings in the wet/dry sand the majority I have found has been in knee to chest deep. I've seen many guys playing frisbie and even football in knee to waist deep water, that is what I like to see, they lose it and we find them. Good luck and keep us posted. John

Gold is where you find it......can be anywhere......but you will find more in the h2o! gl and hh
