Beach Hunting

Wednesday ill be taking my Explorer and a friend to the beach. Its the first time hes been out so of course I want to make a good impression. Its also the first time Ill have used the explorer on the beach. Can anyone recommend settings as I dont want to get there and look like I dont know what Im doing, Id rather set up the night before. Ill be in both wet and dry and will skip between frequently. Theres lots of trash on the beach but i dont mind digging forever as long as I get a few coins during the day. (Cant remember what its called) - Is the picture discrim, ie the tick or cross screen worth its weight (in the UK)? Or do I risk losing coins and jewellry using this discrim?
Thanks for any advice.

Lee,
I do most of my beach hunting in the wet sand near the water line. The biggest problem is that there are a lot of nails to contend with. For this reason I prefer to hunt in the Ferrous mode with the Iron Mask set to -16. The iron targets give a low pitched growl that should just be ignored. I dig all higher pitched tones.
If you get tired of the growling, then you can reduce the Iron Mask settng to -12 or -14. If you do this you run the some risk of masking good targets if you sweep too fast.
You will need a good sand scoop to recover the targets quickly.
Hope this helps,
Glenn
