Beach hunting after beachcomber passes

Member
I've read that it's no sense hunting the areas already covered by the beach combers. However, just for kicks I tried this anyway and still find Pennies, nickels, quarters, and other metal on the surface. Never found anything significant though. So checking what you all have to say about covering ground already passed over with a sifter.

I strickly beach hunt..... must have been spreading rumors lol. Think about the machine design....... think about target surfaces and weight. Also, you have proven it DONT get many of the targets we are looking for....unless there is a way to catch and hold it. Having the machine to FLUFF the sand makes it easier for people to loose targets. It also smooths out the sand making it easier to run a coil closer ..... increasing depth and it does get some of the larger trash out of the way.

Yeah, and I believe it flattens the coins that are on edge. Which makes them easier to hit.

I hunt behind the sand rake all the time...got to know the driver pretty well, he keeps an eye out for the hotspots and lets me know where the 'party was at' the night before...He starts very early am, but so do I...I like to try to beat him to the beach on account of the footprints and cooler tracks in the sand tell me a lot...the sandrakes dont get coins or gold, just light paper and whatnot...

Like Dew said, a guy can really pull a nice grid after they rake everything flat, but it is important to know the high traffic areas which are wiped clean like an etch a sketch once the sandrake passes, so its one of those things..danged if you do type of deal....

I especially like to hunt the tight turns the rake does at the end of his stretch...lots of stuff piles up right there as all that sand spills off the rake when he makes the turn...thats chain territory..

Really an excellent tip about the turns the rake takes. Never dawned on me.

I like to hunt in the tracks of the beach cleaners, especially on the turns items will get pushed out. As had been said, the guys who operate them make good friends! :detecting:

When I get to the beach I routinely hit the turn ridge left by the machines and have not seen large benefits. Maybe someone else gets there first.

What irks me is that the machines don't seem to do very well picking up the fruity drink pouches that kids like to empty and drop. The pouches seem to get pushed down a couple inches where they sound like a great big stomping chain. :ranting:

Ah well ... there are good targets out there; just need to get the coil over them.

The few beach end turns at the towel line are the ones you want...the rest higher up are scarce...My beach rake guy stops and chats every day, He is interested in what I've found. I even let him try my rig once just so he could see what this Sport is all about...He is now paying attention to the travel patterns instead of just driving back and forth...he stops and lets me know if he noticed something unusual, like finger tracks in the sand where somebody was furiously finger sifting for a dropped item....THAT is my primary 'Want To Know' from him.!:clapping:..

THAT is the super 'mother of all' location! Most sandrake guys just drive the tractor and try to get it done, if you can make friends with one, and let him know what is important to you...and IF he pays attention as a diversion to just driving, AND then lets you know...its very good...

Funny, he really is paying attention now, almost as if He's excited to come to work and check out the beach!....lets me know where a pile of diapers were and everything..almost as if we are a team!
He starts raking at 5am, so I try to get there before he does to get the towels, check the trash cans, and the general track layout from the night before...its such a huge beach, I cannot cover it all, so a guy has to smoke jump the fresh tracks and get a few tips from the rake driver..

Great points mudpuppy!!

And for you dumpster divers out there you can find lots of stuff where they empty the siffters. Lots of beach toys, towels, beach shoes etc. A whole other cottage yard sale industry there if don't mind scroungeing.

You got that right there Grunter!

All sorts of stuff people leave behind or drop..the wife has not bought a towel in the past few years, and I've not bought any shoes! Most of the clothes I now wear I have found at the beach as well...I gotta brand new pair of Clarke high dollar sandals last year that fit perfect! I scavange empty cans, they are worth a dime a piece up here..easy money..We sell all sorts of stuff at our garage sale every year that I find on the beach.

One early morning two years ago, I was on the beach working hard to make some jack, my sandrake guy was driving in from the South straight on, and only @ a hundred yards away, when all of a sudden, he jumped out of his rig and ran down to the waterline...there was a dead guy who washed up! He waved me off, secured the perimeter so to speak, and got on the blower, shortly after, here came the rescue squad and cops!...I always wonder what I would have done if I was first on the find...knowing me, after ascertaining if rescusitation had any merit, ashamed to say I woulda probably given him a quick sweep and checked for a ring or chain before making the call..:sadwalk:....

Gives me the shudders thinking about it sometimes...not because had I been quicker I woulda found the dead guy, but not really knowing for sure how I woulda responded in that event?..so its good to prepare mentally for these possibilities and have it all worked out before hand so a guy can go into 'auto pilot' and do whats right...sooner or later, if a guy is up super early, its something to mentally prepare for...

Thanks for the great advice to you all! The rake guy I've seen at VA beach is rather observant guy as well. He notified some folks who lost a ring 0200 in the morning, that I was down the beach. They found me, I found the ring. This past summer/fall, these guys seem to get out earlier and earlier. I try to beat them to read the sand. The advice about the turn edge really make sense so I can't wait to give this a try.
