Beach Hunter ID

I just got a new BHID 300 and put it on a straight shaft. I hunt the NJ beaches. To me, its a great detector. Deep, stable and easy to use. First starting out, ground balance as required. Hunt with the sensitivity on the pre-set in discrim mode. When you get used to the detector, you can up the sensitivity as long as it is stable and hunt in all metal.

The all metal mode can get tricky on some targets ( I found out some rusted bobbie pins were coming up in the mid tone ID in all metal, but were discriminated out in discrim mode). But, I dug several DEEP nickels ( at least 16 inches down) in all metal. Thing is, in this mode, on those nickels , there was only a slight change in the threshold and there were no lights that lit up. In a way, that is a very good way to determine its a really deep target.

All in all, I love this detector. I also have an Excal 1000, which I love too, but at this time all I am using on the beach is the BHID 300.

I'm looking into getting this one for next summer. http://www.keeneeng.com/Merchant2/me...egory_Code=2ID

I'm thinking about using it to recover my water targets rather than using a scoop. It's just a thought though. I may be better of just scooping rather than bring a lot of attention to the swimming areas by running this machine it them. We'll see. There is a lake that I hunt that has a lot of traffic in non dedicated swim areas.

I have two BHID 300's. One for myself and one for my dad or brother for when they want to hunt with me.

I primarily hunt fresh water so I use the DISC mode 99.9% of the time. When I'm working a target I'll switch to all metal to fine tune the pinpoint of that target. I'll also switch to all metal when I get a very faint whisper in the head phones. But I primarily search in DISC as there is a lot of non desireables in these fresh water lakes. On the rare occasion I get to the beach, I hunt in all Metal 90% of the time.

As for the settings. I'll do a ground balance and then run the sensitivty up until the machine gets a bit unstable. I'll then run it down just to where it becomes stable. I'll set the gain to where I can hear a very slight hum. Some times I'll set the gain up to where there is a pretty decent hum and then hit the toggle switch over to 'reset' and that usually takes the hum out of it. That leaves me with a pretty good setting on the sensitivity as well as gain.

Disclaimer:

I've only had the machine for about 3 months and I'm still learning about it so what you see above may not be the norm but it works for me. The thing about it in my area is that you can get a little used to the pull tabs and bottle caps so late in the hunt you don't really listen for certain differences in tones. When that gold does show up in the scoop, when you thought you had another pull tab, you forget about the exact tone it made.
