I have a White's Beach Hunter ID and realy like the way it works at the beach in the dry and wet sand.
However, the original coil is just too buoyant for water hunting and I did not want to add extra weight.
After about an hour my wrist and arm would start aching from keeping enough pressure on the coil to keep it underwater.
It is a real floater!
The new "300" coil is better but it still floats a bit.
I traded around for a used BHID with the new "300" coil on it.
After that "300" coil went seriously bad, I removed it and sent it back to White's for repair or replacement.
In the meantime I bought a EXcelerator 10" "DD" coil from Kellyco for the DFX/MXT and since the BHID is electronically a DFX I installed it.

This coil works as good and maybe a bit better than the original BHID coil as far as depth but ... it has ZERO boyancy ..... :clapping: ...
It works so well I might just leave it on there and use the "300" coil on my V3.
Sure wish there were some good waterproof connectors out there ... :sad: ...

This mod requires opening the detector and un-pluging the coil connector and then disconnecting the old the coil wires and installing the new ones.
*** It WILL void any warranty you have on your detector ***
And the red gasket that keeps out the bad salt water is a bit tricky to get back on.
That gasket must be seated correctly to keep out the water.
A good coating of silicon grease helps it slide into place.
Other than that it was not too bad of a job and took about an hour to do ... (I am slow).

Way to go Willee. Would be nice to get some solid feedback that it is as good as the factory coil as far as depth and also a comparison to the 300 coil. I have been thinking about one of these machines but my physical abilities made me shy away from that big 12" coil. Please keep us informed how it works out for you. Thanx
 
That's a great idea. I wonder if Whites would do this conversion with an after market coil or maybe they would with their own new 10 inch DD coil. this might solve a couple of problems for me such as the high mineralization and the large amount of iron at the sites I hunt. Better separation and the DD would help with the black sand.

In your case the 8" coils might be a better choice for picking thru the trash and rejecting iron ... maybe even a 5" coil.
If it works on the DFX it should work on the BeachHunter ID.

Good luck on getting White's to do the custom work for you.
They might ... it never hurts to ask.
 
On a salt water beach.
It is awesome.
No need to go past he preset mark on the sensitivity knob.
A larger coil would have been just too much.

This is the coil that White's should have put on this detector from the start.
Deep, Stable, and ZERO BUOYANCY!
I am impressed that a coil can make such a difference.

As soon as the White's "300" coil comes back from repair ... it will be up for sale.
The stock Beach Hunter ID coil is also for sale!

Willee that's a nice mod . I have a BHID with stock coil and been thinking of sending it in for the 300 coil
Question 1 when you say a larger coil would be to much , does that mean for out of water hunting .
2 Is the cable the same size to fit stock connector
3 How do the wire colors match up
I agree whites has been behind with coils on this machine and should have changed years ago .
The only problem is with a short cable you cant chest mount which i like but i can live with that Thanks Mike G
 
I have "NO" issues with the new "300" coil!!! It's an amazing coil and is almost totally neutrally buoyant. I have no issues keeping it on the bottom and it moves without any effort for me.

I think the 300 is a major improvement over the older BHID coil. I find so many good deep targets in bad black sand up here in the N. East with it!

1. Even the "300" coil floats ... it is not neutral in the water but its much better than the older one it replaced.
I use the BHID mainly on the dry sand and really dont want to detect much deeper than about 9 or 10" .
I am fairly sure the "300" coil would detect deeper than that.

2. The watertight compression seal is rubber and will seal tightly against the outside diameter of the new coil cable.
One of the internal wires (black one) is smaller but it connects with the metal teeth in the connector just fine.
Have not had any intermittent problems yet.

3. White's is red core shielded and clear core shielded. The EXcelerator coil is black core shielded and clear core shielded.
I connected it like the black core cable was the red one.

Yes ... that is a short cable and might not be long enough to hip or chest mount.

The 300 goes deeper than what you have listed. I absolutely want to dig the deepest faint targets as the old gold is deeper down there!

It sounds like the Exceleator doesn't go that deep but is completely neutral in the water. The 300 is easy to keep on the bottom for me and I need all the power that it offers.

One other thing, not being able to hip or chest mount the machine is something that's important to me.

Hey Willee, First time poster.Been a lurker on this forum for about a year now. I also run a BHID with the 9.5 stock floater! and I hate that coil in the surf.Was thinking about sending my unit to Whites for the 12'' mod when I read your post.I do realize that your mod will void my warranty but it almost seems worth it,since the EXcelerator coil is on sale at Kellyco for around 125.00 plus shipping.I guess my question is do you think the new coil will have any long term affects on the machine?(probably a dumb question)But I just can't afford a new machine.And do you think the average person can do the MOD himself? PS. sorry about the run on paragraph, just can't figure out how to start a new one!!!! New to typing also. Thanks for your input.
 
Hi Undertoe, welcome to the forum.
That is a good question.

Yes ... if you open the case and change coils it will void your warranty with White's.

It is not hard to change the coil but you need to work slow and carefully so you do not damage anything or create other problems when you do it.

Opening the BHID case is just a matter of removing the battery, removing the 8 screws and nuts, and opening the case.
All the cable connectors are on the other side and you will need to remove the four screws holding the circuit board in place to get to them.
Be careful and dont force anything or unplug any other wires except the battery and the coil cable.

Use plenty of silicone grease when you put it back together and be careful not to damage the red seal ring.
If you are handy with tools and small parts you should not have any problems.

Just be sure to note how everything is BEFORE you unplug or remove anything.
Take some photos or make some drawings.
Just in case you need to restore it to as found condition.

Perhaps Mr. Bill could do this mod for ya.

Here is a photo of the coil plug.
On the Excelarator coil the black wire goes where the red one is now.

I have always used it in Disc mode as I am looking mainly for recently lost jewelry and dont need to squeeze out every last bit of depth for that.
I have tried the all metal mode and it does detect deeper and the lights still flash on all but the faintest of targets.

I wonder why White's could not get the tone ID to work in all metal mode if the lights do?

Anyhow, I just bought another Excalibur II with a 10" coil from FlipTop and have decided to list my BHID on the for sale page.
Mixed feeling about selling this one as I have got it working really good with that new coil but with two Excalibur II detectors it just wont see much use.

IMHO, just send the unit in to White's and get the Super 12" (300) coil installed. It's a "DEEP" and easy to use coil in the water!

White's spent plenty of time designing and getting this coil ready for release.

Don't void the warranty as I'm pretty sure you'll like this one:thumbup:

I had one of the first conversions of the BHID to "300" coil. As a matter of fact, White's only had the black coils available at that time!

Since it's been a while, I really don't want to post the price as it might have changed since I had it installed!

You need to send the detector to White's repair center in VA, (Centerville Electronics). You should call and speak to Bob, super nice guy!!!

I don't have the current number available.

Hey Willee,

Just some food for thought....:shrug: Did you do anything special to the connector on the EX coil or do any depth testing for waterproofing? Also, in theory anyway, a 12" conical should run circles around a 10" DD on most beaches and in neutral to low FE ground for depth. I would think the DD coil would work well in "black sand" though. Am I "all washed up" here?
 
water proof connectors can be had at docs place http://www.docsdetecting.com/docsplace/coiltek/coils2.html#connector
this would make coils interchangeable :super: i havent tryed this yet my self... worth looking into..
how dose the dd coil handle the rusty bottle caps & other iron ?
 
I recently read your article about the Excelerator coil (Willee)
I did however locate a special long cable version of the D2 from,Warrens Detectors here in Florida.
I was able to keep the unit as a hip mount and the D2 is a BEAST.
If there is a neutral buoyancy coil,then this may very well be it.
Deeper targets,smaller targets and super sensitive with the Gray Ghost headphone mod.
Looking to do the remote pinpoint in the next week or so.
