beach detector

It depends on how much you want to spend... You can get a BeachhunterID for around eight hundred I guess up to a grand for an Excalibur give or take.. If you're not going in the water a ExplorerII is a pretty good machine as well as a DFX for wet/dry sand. There are so many detectors out there... You really should take the time to research for your needs. Before I purchased my machine I researched every brand and made my choice on my needs.

Its like a computer... how much are you going to use it and for what? I chose the DFX because i travel full time. Its a darn good all around detector. But... if i lived near the beach and JUST beach hunted id go for the minelab.

After useing many detectors I reley on the Minelab Excal 1000 for most beach use, wet salt and dry sand. It is very deep and ignors iron unlike a Pulse. Pulse is deeper, but I can't use a backhoe.

The Fisher CZ20 and Tesoro Tiger Shark are runners up.. The BeachHunter II would be in the running except the coil floats and you have to hold it down in the water, plus you can't dive with it deeper than 20 feet.

Hi, great info on the Excal. I am selling my Garret Sea Hunter to buy an Excal 1000. Do you think this is a good move in your opinion?

Gary

I HUNT FRESH AND SALT WATER OUT TO NECK DEEP WITH THE BEACH HUNTER ID NO PROBLEMS!WHEN IT DOES FLOAT IT GOES UP SLOW,PLUS WERE IS IT GONNA GO?? ITS ATTACHED TO THE CONTROL BOX,IF YOU HIP OR CHEST MOUNT IT THERES NO ISSUE THERE.CHEST MOUNT IS BEST YOU CAN SEE ID LIGHTS VERY EASY.

You will want to buy a straight shaft right away and a proper battery charger and NiMh battery packs will be on your shopping list fairly quickly as the NiCad pack tends to fail when using the standard charger. It would be nice if it came packaged that way in the first place but it doesn't so budget a little extra to make it right for your water hunting.
If you don't have a good water scoop then allow for that too as you will be doing a lot of digging of good targets.

Cheers,

BDA, you hunt with Excal correct? What would you say is better, Garret Sea Hunter or Excal. selling my Garret to buy excal today.

Gary

I haven't used the Garrett Seahunter so it would be unfair for me to comment. I can tell you that I have had very good success with my Excal 1000. If you go for the Excal insist upon getting the new yellow headphones as the blue ones don't give great sound differentiation. This is a auditory tone machine so sound quality is critical. Upgrading my headphones to GG's or comparable is the next step in the evolution of my Excalibur.

I will say that I looked at the Seahunter, the BHID, the surfmaster and the CZ20 as alternates before taking the plunge and spending mucho moola on the Excal 1000. Based on my research, which was geared towards my conditions the Excalibur 1000 was the best choice in my mind. It took me 3 months to make up my mind, which is about the same amount of time that I take when buying a new vehicle.
So far I think I have made the right choice even though I am on record as being dissatisfied with the fit and finish of this unit and Minelab's inattention towards resolving what I see as design flaws.
What is important is the brains of the unit and the coil arrangement. I have to give Minelab top marks in that department and that is why I am sticking with the Excalibur 1000.

Do the research, make the best possible decision and then get out there and swing. If the coil doesn't go over the target, no machine will find you the gold. You have to train yourself to the machine as well or you will only have lukewarm results.
Check out the Goldenolde.com for some good advice as well as the advice from the members of this forum. We are all still learning and hopefully always will be learning as that is part of the fun of this hobby. Keep it fresh and keep it fun!

BDA, Just purchased the excal 1000. I really love the machine, but most of all love the game. Put the Garret on Ebay and hope to get $400. Should go considering only 2.5 months old and very well taken care of. I appreciate the help. Sorry I wont be heading to Bermuda on the cruise with my mother. Strarted a new job and money is a little more important at the moment. Will miss the fact that we cant hunt for a few hours together, but the job paid for the excal. After this I have to start saving money or I am a dead man. Just want to do whats best for me. I truly loved the Garret but I was tired of digging up so much trash that it was killing my hunting time. Only so many hours in the day. Dont want to eliminate small rings and such but if i can at least knock out some iron, I increase my hunting time to 2 more hours. Thanks for the good words.

Gary

I wish you lots of gold in your scoop. Don't have so much fun that you forget to save the money from work or you're a dead man!
