Beach Detecting Question

Ok, I have a couple quick questions relating to beach detecting. I am headed to the beaches in North Carolina this weekend. My questions are as follows:

1. Which coil is the best? I have the DD High Freq Coil and the coil that comes with the machine. I believe 7.5 freq. Something like that. (I am new to this)

2. What should I set the SENS on.

3. Last but not least, where is the best place to detect? Down by the water of up by the dunes area where people sit to sun? I am looking for anything, would be nice to find relics from ship wrecks, that sort of thing.

Thanks for everyones help. I appreciate it.

Cheers

I am sure that your question is answered somewhere on another thread-just read. I am new also but as far as where to look I would say your relics from ship wrecks have more than likely been found. You need to wait for a storm and then go right after. As far as where to look on where people hang out would seem better to me. I told a friend I got a detector and was headed to the beach(it will be here Monday 3-31-2008:geek:. He said he knew a guy who early morning after the 4th of July would go hit the beach detecting.

Sounds like you have the Medium Frequency coil at 7.5khz. This is actually pretty ideal for beach and relic hunting - which is why it is supplied with the detector. The Higher Frequency (18.75khz) coils are preferred for gold prospecting although they too can be used on beaches with many board members claiming success and great satisfaction with these coils. I was always under the impression that the Medium Frequency coils like yours is are best for beaches..

As for sensitivity, I'd wait for someone with more beach experience than myself to reply as I've only used mine on default settings on beaches. If it's your first time out, that's a good idea. Might be worth activating the Target ID Stabilizer (a "Plus" symbol will appear on the LCD when this is on) and remember not to swing from dry to wet sand in the same sweep (if you can help it) or your detector will respond to the moisture.

If you're looking for relics, remember that the beach has altered and changed over many decades. Also, watch for fish hooks!! You should find more than a few lead sinkers and no doubt a lot of trash on most beaches so expect to find plenty on your first trip out. There's always a good chance of finding coins and jewellery where people sit and lay so as you may have surmised, the sand dunes may be a good spot. A lot of professional beach detectorists watch where the tourists sit and then scan the area after the sun starts to set and the visitors leave. A lot of people suggest that you carry a large, open pouch on your belt. When you find something that isn't trash, just glance at it as you lift it out of the sand and then pocket it. Again, this is how the pros do it and the reason they don't stop to gloat over their find is because they've found that strangers will sometimes walk up to them and challenge them for the find.

As a detectorist, everyone will take the time to watch you work. Even I used to enjoy watching them work from a distance years before I even got into detecting. Be sure to bring earphones as the surf may drown out any sound you might hear from the detector. And the sunscreen!

Alright, Thanks for the help. What a great website. I really appreciate everyone taking the time to help me out. I am at the beach now and will be heading out ina little while. We will see what I can find. I will let everyone know. Thanks again and happy hunting.
Cheers
Kevin
