When you hit a beach, how do you normally approach it?

I see references to terms I'm not familiar with and a quick google didn't find anything for me. What do the following terms mean?
-lane (low tide water's edge?)
-pit (wading depth?) (between shore and sandbars if any are there?)
I think there was another commond term, maybe for the dry-sand towel line, but can't remember what it was.

Thanks.

Guess nobody wants to reply! I have wondered about the same thing. Also another term in the mine?? what does that mean.

The 'Lane' is the wet sand area at waters edge. This is where parents (especially Mom's) play with the youngsters and rings may fall off slippery fingers.

The 'Mine' is anywhere from waist to chest deep water. Working the mine will usually get you more gold. At times the mine can be tough to work depending on how hard the surf is that day. In the mine you have to watch out for waves that may knock you over.

We all started sometime and someone-probably someone with a lot of patience, tooks us each aside and showed us a new exciting. Hobby.

Compassion, my friend, and a good dose of patience works wonders. A reference to the spectular Golden Olde site is so appropriate. I wish someone would have had that for me when I started back in 1970-71.

Compassion. <><
It's not the reply ,it's been answered about 10,000 times.
That doesn't surprise me. But if it's been answered 10,000 times and it's still being asked, that suggests it will continue to be asked until something changes. For instance, a FAQ. (I've thought of trying to tackle that for the Sov forum but I'm not sure I have enough experience yet with that detector to do a good job at it.) Also, sometimes the same questions being asked do bring up new information or angles. That's partially why I phrased the question--"When you hit a beach, how do you normally approach it?"--as I did. As individual as people are, I was curious at different folks' average approach. (I do understand in different conditions, folks will do different things--for instance, after a storm, looking for cuts.) The few times I've gone, I've either worked the water line if it's low tide and, if not, zig-zagged up and down to see if I could find hot spots.
search the "goldenolde" I think thats the spelling?? your ? will all be answered there.
Thanks. I couldn't remember the name of that site but found it again after that. It's at thegoldenolde.com. I think I read everything on there a little while back before I'd even gone to the beach at all. But I hadn't recalled terms like lane and mine being explained. (Just did an advanced google on that site which suggests that he doesn't use the term "lane" or "mine".) I just went back and read it some of it again and while there is a lot of good info there it's not laid out simply. You pretty much have to read all of the pieces to pick out the info. And while it's enjoyable reading, I guess I was looking for more of a beginner's ABC's than that.

LIKE MATT SAID THE LANE IS THE SHALLOW AREA THAT GETS UNCOVERED BY LOW TIDE....THE MINE WHERE ALOT MORE GOLD IS....IS THE TRENCH AREA BETWEEN THE LOW TIDE LINE AND SAND BAR IF THERE IS ONE...IT'S THE WAIST TO CHEST DEEP SPOT... YOU TEND TO FIND YOUR LARGER MENS RINGS HERE...SOME TIMES BIG CHAINS TOO.
