So about 5:30 I suddenly realized I had nothing to do on this lovely 100 degree evening. Fishing? Yeah, I need to hit one of my spots anyway (I fish some KILLER ponds). But wait, I just got my new 705..and my buddy just moved into a new place in the country not far from where I fish! I loaded the fishing gear as a formality really, and headed out to recover the fabulous treasures that surely must be just waiting for ME with my XTERRA to find them!! This would be my second visit to the property. The first visit was mostly to see the 'new place' and catch up with my buddy after not seeing him a few months. I took note of the layout, noticed that the new house was apparently sitting where the old farmhouse had been, noticed the old treeline that was a fencerow in front of the house, spotted what may have been an old well but really grown up with five foot tall weeds. A good spot!! So with high hopes and my new whizbang beep, dig, sell, retire machine in hand I got started! I played with the settings a bit trying to get a feel for my new toy, er TOOL. Wow, this thing is smooth! Swings well, kinda talks softly too me instead of screaming at me like my others sometimes did. Right off the bat I found a modern penny. Then a pulltab, another, a chunk of lead, a chunk of copper pipe, another pulltab, etc. etc. I had my threshold turned up so I could just hear it, and noticed that there's a ton of ferrous trash in this yard judging by all the 'blanks' I heard. After 2 hours of not finding anything good I decided to swing along the treeline/old fencerow. I hunted that about 20 minutes, cussing the fact that the dirt was so humped up around the tree bases....WAIT A MINUTE! The yard had been GRADED down about 8 or so inches before the new house was built!! How had I missed that on my first visit? I have a landscaping business and that should've jumped right out.. So, tail firmly tucked, I came home, took a shower and made this post. I'm sure there's still a couple treasures to be found there, but I'm really thinking all the good stuff was graded and dumped into a ditch somewhere. Sometimes you don't really see what's in front of you!!
