Be kind to old timers, it may just pay off!

I'm on my way home from a road job with my detector in the trunk, I typically do that in hopes of finding a place to stop. I see a sign for a State Park that I have never heard of, I'm from PA and I'm traveling thru Maryland. I immediately see a fishing lake with a beach, a volleyball court, and some picnic groves and there is NO ONE around. I find a campground bathroom and change out of my business clothes and shinny shoes to prepare for the hunt! I head for the volleyball court and find a few coins. I head for the beach and I'm getting all kinds of hits but nothing good. By this time I have enough clad to pay for new batteries, that doesn't happen too often! I then see an old man pull up in a Jeep, he looks like Boxcar Willie, the ol' guy walks up to me and asks "ya findin' any gold are ya"? I just laughed and said that I had a pocket full of change but nothing good. He said "I have one of them there detectors, had it for years, paid $40 for it a long time ago but I never found anything with it, I'm going to have to get it out again". He looks at my 705 and says "wow, mine doesn't look anything like that" ...LOL. He asked if I ever found anything good, he was taken back when I told about him of some of my finds.

The old timer then tells me "ya shouldn't be lookin' over here, why over there up that path was where the old town used to be, there's even old foundations up there if ya look close enough. Back there where the volleyball court is where the old mill was, ya might find stuff there too". We talked for a few minutes and I thanked him, I told him I was going to give the foundations a try. I walked over there and within 5 minutes I had my first Indian of the day! A little while later I had another Indian and a wheetie. By the time I was done I had a 1904 and a 1907 Indian and a 1941 wheetie, not to mention about 30 coins. There is more detecting to do there, I only scratched the surface, when the weeds are down I may have to give it another look. Time to do some research before the next trip.

SO ... be nice to old timers, they know all the spots!

Hot Rod!

Your'e totally right on that. Be kind to the oldies(and the rest of them ages) and they show you hot spots.
Just experienced that yesterday when a old man came and told me the history of the landscape.

He gave me a new picture of how it once looked like.
On that open field a railroad used to cross the field, and there was a big house, behind that a forest.
Was like going back in time. Worked the field and had some Victorian coins.

Always pay off to listen to people and showing interest in a kind way.
Doing my best to be a good ambassadeur to this hobby.

Also, I cant understand why some dont fill the holes=unhappy farmer...takes a couple of seconds and worth every time spendt.=happy farmer, and your'e welcome back.

Mike, I'm with ya on the holes. A lot of time we hunt in threes, if I see a hole that doesn't look good, even if it wasn't mine, I dress it up, the less impact the better. Sometimes after you fill a hole and the dirt dries up it looks worse and needs touched up again.

I also found out that when the Police show up, and I'm sure we all have had that happen on occasion, NICE buys you favor. I had one lady who completely flipped her gourd thinking that I was going to not detect her property, but walk across her property. She had been having trouble with dirt bikers and trespassers, I was even parked along a public road!. She waited till I drove away so I didn't come back ...LOL. She ended up giving me a lead and I found some loot from her tip! As much as I wanted to be not so nice, it paid off.

Ya know, the old timers LOVE to talk about that kind of stuff. I have been trying to get permission locally to hunt an old abandoned house, so far no progress. I told the owner that I read about his house in a local history book, I copied the pages and presented it to him. He's a weird dude and has every right to tell me no, but hey, I gave it a try.

Exactly!

Always be polite even if you not feel for it!!
Today I was working the stubble, when the land owner
came up to me, sitting there on his big horse perfectly dressed and in any way you could tell this
was a man with power and attitude.

He said in a very upnosy way"WHO gave you permission to work this ground??, it belongs to me"
I told him the orginazers name and tell him that we are happy he let us on his land.
He smiled and was fine with that:)

No point starting up with upnosy answer.
Smile and you usually get a smile back.
