Be creative and build your own stainless sand scoop

First make your pattern out of tag board and tape it together so you can see the
actual size and shape you want. Note, straight lines are easier to cut in SS.

Material used:
1. 1ft x 2ft -14 gauge low quality SS plate
2. 1

Nice looking scoop, always good to see home project innovation.

May it serve you well.

 I Like it  nice looking job

You deserve a lot of credit for this scoop. It looks like very well thought out and giving it to a pro to weld (for $25) was a smart move. Keep us posted on how it works for you!

I love this scoop! Does it flex much? it is a nice price, based on your experience how long do you think it will last? Do you think a thicker sheet will make it harder to dig?
Sorry for the questions, But I may have to build that thing!

14 gauge SS is strong and this thing already weighs 5 lbs. I can stand in the scoop and it only flexes a little bit and I weigh over 200. Drill your holes in the SS before cutting and bending it. Use a smaller bit for a pilot hole and then your final bit size. Ream holes on each side to remove burrs. Use oil to save your bit. Draw hole patterns on your tab board and then
center punch these on your SS. Do your bends in the SS plate before cutting the back piece to get a good fit. Cut the handle tube lengthwise so it will expand to receive the wood
handle and will clamp down when the bolts are tightened.

Top piece measures- 7 in. wide x 6 inches(fits inside bottom piece)
Bottom piece- 11 in. long at peak-10 in. at first angle cut
14 in. wide with bends at every 3.5 in.
Back piece- 7 1/8 in. wide
3 7/8 in. at deepest (kept this small to reduce wt)

PS May drill more holes to reduce wt.

can I order one?

How do you feel about making one and selling it to me, Reallly. I would prefer to buy one from someone who made one without cutting corners as the main goal. I have been to chicken to buy one from a dealer because I hear lots of complaints. Idigid

Sorry, but I am headed for a warmer climate for a month or so and hopefully using this sand scoop. If I can build this thing, anybody can. If you do not have all the tools, borrow them from your buddies. Show me how to improve this thing: a better brace design for the handle, an all metal handle maybe, a lighter weight scoop, a better design for the drilled holes etc. I will be watching from poolside.

Received about 10 requests for more information, maybe this picture of pieces ready for the welder will help. One request was: would like a deeper scoop for
a bigger bite of sand. See the picture of the bottom piece, the distance between all the bends are 3.5 inches, increase the side pieces to 4 or 4.5 inches to get
a deeper scoop and therefore a bigger bite.
