battery voltage

I finally ran my first set of batteries down to 10 volts in my MXT and the thresh hold started to get funny. Then I noticed that the thresh hold control could not quiet the thresh hold noise. I replaced the batteries and now it is O.K. I did buy this used and I was wondering if everyone else gets down to 9 volts or is this normal?? Thanks in advance. Tim

Never had mine to 9v, but run 10v all the time. All the threshold control does is set the audio level of the threshold hum. Rob

The problem was that I could not turn down the hum to a threshold, it was too loud even at full ccw. Thanks anyway. Tim

Many of us run Nickle hydride rechargeable batteries and these are 1.2 volts apiece, so 8 of them are only 9.6 volts and the MXT works fine until it gets below 9 volts and the low battery comes on.

I know that it sounds a little weird, but that's what happens. The same thing occurs with my modified Classic III SL & IDX Pro if the batteries are about to croak. In the All Metal mode (threshold-based) you can't tune to a proper threshold audio as it is too loud ... until they totally die. I mainly noted that with some of the rechargeable batteries I have used on rare occasion. As a rule I run with quality alkaline batteries and just change them when they start to get too low. Got them low enough o0n an MXT once to do the same thing.

Like Rick, I use the nickel hydride batteries. When I put them in they read 11v. They always seem to charge to 1.35 v not 1.2v. They quickly read 10v. They are actually still at 10.75 volts after two hours of hunting measured using a voltmeter. The mxt only reads whole voltage numbers. I've hunted 6 hours and haven't had the threshold problem. I must not get close enough to the 9v. The batteries have been charged almost daily since December. Rob

Thanks Monte for the reply, I have created my book of Monte by cutting and pasting alot of your comments, I have learned alot and am now looking for a classic or two. Thanks, Tim
