Battery Test Results

POLEWAGGER

In an attempt to find the best value for a 9V rechargeable battery, I've done some testing with 3 types of batteries. (pictured)
The first battery I used in my modded C was a Duracell. Most will agree, that they are a considerable investment for the avid detectorist. They will give you around 10hrs of hunting time. Prices vary, depending on sales and location, but they end up costing too much in the long run. I went through at least 20 Duracells (over 200hrs of hunting) before wising up and trying out some rechargeables.
I tested The Energizer "recharge" first. I don't feel the need to comment further on them, since the next battery is the obvious choice due to cost and longevity.
The Maximal Power Li-ion battery charges to 8.6V max, but powers my rig for two 5+hr hunts, and still will give 4-5 beeps on the battery test. I've yet to run one all the way down, but if it will hold a charge longer than a Duracell, with one charge, the value is undeniable. $8.99 free shipping available on ebay. Even if they fail after 10 charges, you come out ahead.

Some other test results performed on my C with a Fluke 8012B.
Current draw test in all metal, screaming, W/O headphones: 67mA
With headphones 30-35mA (volume control turned down so phones are tolerable)
Disc- W/O HP just over 30mA
With HP just under 30mA

Judging from this, I would say, running in all metal, cuts battery life by about 50%, unless you are using headphones.

Li-ion should hold a charge for a long time. I have a whites TDI w/Li-ion batteries and they hold a charge for many months and they are 3 yrs old.
Thanks for the investigation and sourcing. You didn't mention what the Li-ion charger cost.

Took your advise and got 2 of the Maximal and the charger off feebay 28.00 shipped. One for the Vaq and one for the propointer. Thanks for the info :clapping:

Since you have already modded your C, you might as well add a charger jack and protection diode. Add a charger line from your charger and you have a handy plug in charge system.

You can go for the two battery plus charger deal, like cz6aBill did, or you can use a standard charger. Contrary to what they try to tell you, you CAN charge these with an unspecified charger. These batteries have a control chip installed to prevent shorting and overcharging. If you monitor the charge with a VM, it will charge to about 8.6 then jump to 11.6 when full charge is reached. I'm using a standard 30mA slow charger
