Battery Questions

I've been wondering a few things regarding batteries & detectors. Here's my questions:

1- How much of a role did battery type/size/cost play in the purchase of your MD, if any?

2- Do you use throw-aways or rechargable.

3- If rechargables, is it a battery "pack" that is specific for your MD, or the more generic, rechargable AA, 9v, or whatever your MD calls for?

4- Again, if you use the generic-type, what brand, and do you feel they hold a charge as well as throw-aways?

I haven't tried any of the rechargable type (like AA, C, D, 9v) for years, but wasn't overly impressed with them back then. I'm sure however their performance has had to improve over the years, atleast I'd think.

Hi Smitty,

Heres the answers to your questions.

1 Batteries did play a role in my last 4 purchases. It was part of the overall weight issue and the weight issue was a major factor in my purchases. I just slap in one nine volt battery and I'm good to go for a long time. No wires. No battery packs and they last so long the price is not an issue.

2 I use Duracell throw away nine volt.

3 ( this response should be read with a Spanish accent ) Battery pack!!! We don't got no battery pack! We don't need no stinking battery pack!

4 Again. ( this response should be read with a Spanish accent ) Battery pack!!! We don't got no battery pack! We don't need no stinking battery pack!

When you have a uMax and a set of headphones, Batteries are no issue.

Hope that helps,

With Spanish accent..What about if you don't got no stinking UMax...what do you use ?

lol, thanks for the info. I'm just kinda thinkin' out loud for down the road. Funny you'd mention the Tesoro, I've actually been checking them out lately. I think the next MD I get may very well be the UMax. Atleast it's currently up there on the wishlist.

He says "WE DON NED NO STINKEN BAUTREY PACKS"

How's my accent?

HAHAHAHHA LOL

1. None
2. Rechargeable for the machines that take AA and I buy 9-volt alkaline for the machines that require them.
3. No packs - individual AA cells - I bought a hundred AA NiMH - hey they were on sale - and better than being short.
4. Using the LANMAR NoMEM Pro - over 2,000 mAH each gives ample run time.

My son has to many toys requiring batteries and rechargeable are nice to have around - and plenty of them.
One container of charged - another container needs charged. Don't mix
I use permanent marker and the month & year on each battery. I dunno why
I have about 50-60 of another brand which I haven't used in a year or so. They were 1500 mAH rated.
Nowadays there are several available well over 2,000 mAH rating.
Years ago I used NICADs, which can get memory.
NiMH don't have the memory problems that NICADs did.
I can charge a couple dozen at a time using a conditioner charger.
Due to your post - I should look into what the market offers now. Good idea

lol.....tabdog, I'm more of the Blazing Saddles kind of guy  That's a nice "collection" of items you havemakes me glad I'm gettin' out Friday for some swingin' with Echostar61.

tab-nabit, thanks also for the input. If you happen to find something better than the NiMH battery, let us know. If I can get by with no more battery-expense, my 45 cents of clad can be touted as pure profit :detecting:

I don't like the 9v batteries.
AA in a holder is fine w me.
Use alkalines even though we got plenty nicad and nmh around here...
My little yellow feller might run forever on it's batteries!
But I do change em out...

My first detector purchases were Tesoros, partly due to the single 9Volt battery. Since then, I have owned and used several that used 8 AAs. As it turned out, none of the detectors I use are hard on batteries so it sort of became a non-issue. I've always used name brand Alkalines with good results. I have used rechargeable NIMH batteries a lot in my digital camera. Recently NIMH's have begun showing up that hold a charge (in use or not) much longer than the originals and the ones I've used have been excellent. I haven't been using them in my detectors due to the fact that I don't go thru the alkalines at an excessive rate. Actually, if battery life becomes a concern to me, I'll be really happy as that means I've been doing a lot of detecting. I don't see using a dedicated battery pak versus individual rechargeables because one can use the individuals in other applications as well. JMO
