Battery question...

Dan-Pa.

New member
Just purchased a slimline eagle spectrum...Its absolutely like new(circa 1993)alkaline battery was never used and Nicad was probably used once and sat in a closet ever since...Is there any way to bring back the nicad to charge as apparently hasn't been charged since or do I have to buy a replacement..I know Jimmy Sierra had a device years ago but feel the battery just died from age..By the way the customs programs were like they came out of the factory and the unit works great in every facet..Sort of like finding a needle in a haystack and does one feel standing in a closet since 93 has damaged the charger also. As it detector works perfectly hope it stays that way..Any ideas from the forum...

The charger should still be good and unless the battery pack has developed a shorted cell, it should be able to come back to life. It may take several charge and discharge cycles to get them back to full capacity though.

First time around didn't charge enough to power up unit so I discharged using a home made discharger..Slowly but surely its coming back to life....sure worth a try in any case...Amazing as would bet this unit although 13 years old probably has hours on it...

I suspect it's too old and has sat discharged for too long (remember there is a self discharge factor as well).

If you have the wall charger for the NiCd, and are handy with a soldering iron, then I would take a look at converting the 8AA Alkaline battery pack to rechargable with NiMh batteries. I recently did my factory Alkaline pack for my Xl Pro and have since bought and converted a 2nd Alkaline pack. I had to buy a charger however (went with a nice automatic NiMh charger from PowerStream. Note the Whites factory charger is not automatic and just charges at a constant rate. The one I got is made for NiMh batteries and will sense charge state and drop to a very low trickle charge once the battery pack is charged up. No need to worry about leaving it plugged in too long).

Here is where I found the info on converting a Whites AA Alkaline pack to rechargable:

http://66.51.97.78/jb/battery.html

NiMh charger $25 (you may not need this if you have the NiCd one already).
NiMh batteries $19 (you get 16 "AA" size and 4 "AAA" sized ones at Sam's Club for this price - enough for 2 packs)
Whites AA Battery holder $10 (you already have one)
Radio Shack power outlet $2.50 (each)
Reverse Current blocking Diode $1.50 (for 2)

The great thing about this setup is if the batteries get where they don't hold a good charge after a few years, you just pop them out and replace them with new ones. No need to buy an expensive battery pack, just the inexpensive "AA" size NiMh ones.

Here are some photos of my battery pack and wall charger after conversion (note: one battery pack had been converted the other was still stock when I took these photos a while back):
