Battery Question on EX II

How much detecting time are you folks getting on average with the 1600 rechargable ? For some unknown reason I'm only getting about 3 hours or so I have 2 of the 1600's and both seem to get about the same run time. Maybe it's just that my EX II is a battery hog ? Granted I tend to hunt very trashy areas but D@MB ! My XS ran allot longer than that in the same areas. If I still owned it I would try these batteries in it and compare the run times but it's history now and I have no way to compare them.
Maybe there was a bad batch of batteries that went out ? Now you know WHY I like those quick charging 2200's I keep as spares for my AA pack otherwise I'd be screwed on a full day hunt.

I have noticed the same thing with my 1600 pack I got with the EX II. I get about 4 hours on it,but I get over 15 with the AA pack. I just keep it charded and always have spare AA with me.

and my EX II runs stable all the way down the battery scale until you can barely see any scale left unlike my XS did.
Mike

I get about 4 hours also with the rechargable. If I suspect I will make a day of it, I'll use the AA pack, and get more than 8 hours out of them.

You know what's interesting Mike, maybe it's just me but this should be a no brainer for someone affiliated with Minelab, yet, you will only get replies from those who like you do not know.
Does it say in the manual how long it should last on a full charge? I would send it back to them for replacment because 4 hours just doesn't seem right.

They should last as long as what I was getting out of my 2 year old batteries in my XS ... I could hunt the $hit out of it all day long and never have a problem. At least 4-5 hours on the beach at night with the backlight on or 8-10 hours without it.
It has to be one of two things.
Either the EXII is a freeking battery hog or the batteries just aren't up to the task
Wasn't the XS battery 12 volt's ? I'm pretty sure they were. If that's the case then I'm sure I've got it figured out because the EX II 1600 battery is only 9.6 volts ... But .. the AA pack that comes with it has 12 volts stamped on the case.
So .. think about it, if the new 1600 is only 9.6 volts then it sure won't last as long

I run Powerex 2300s which are only 1.2V and get a heck of alot more than 5 hours. (EX1)

My first set of after market nimhs for the Explorer are Energizer 1800 nimhs size AA. They are almost 2 year old. I have never run them down even on three consecutive outings, 2 weeks apart, with a total run time in excess of 8 hours. They still test more than 1700+ mah on a discharge from a full charge on my Orbit Microlader charger/discharger. I have never run them down as I charged them up each time I go out. They have never dumped in the field on me even on 6-7 hour hunts. On 4 hour hunts, if I recall correctly, I have in excess of 1300+ mah left in the pack. They also serve as my digital camera batteries.
No offense but your packs are toast
In comparison,
I have an new and original Minelab Sovereign battery pack rated at 1000 mah and 12 volts. On 3 cycles, it produces an average of 1020+ mah capacity. This pack handles 4 hour hunts easy. I have not test how much is left after a hunt though.

If those original minelab explorer packs can be popped open (and closed) as easy as the alkaline battery packs (so I can tap into the terminals) I'd be glad to give some of you guys actual mah ratings on your packs and use my charger to format (correct cell charge state differences) them a few times to see if they can be saved. Round trip shipping will be yours, and I'll only do a few packs (10?). Each format takes about 8 hours so 3 cycles will take most of a day and you can get a discharge graph if you like.
And for the first guy who sends me his busted minelab explorer pack (email me first) I'll rebuild the pack with after market 2100 mah cells at cost just to see if it can be done (dont know if I can open the things and put them back together again. Thats 2.25/cell x 8 cell + 3.85 to order the cells + plus actual return shipping. If I am able to do it, I'll post the rebuild right here so you guys can do it.
I'm a battery geek, what can I do?
bing

Its the mah (milliamp hours) that tells you how long a battery will last. 12 volts, 9.6 volts has to do with the rate of energy that is given as measured in that scale.

Both of my 1600's are less than 4 months old and have been like this since day one. The original 1600 that came in the box from the factory and the other came from Minelab( Las Vegas ) Both are from 2 entirely different batches and are many serial numbers apart from each other.
What the heck, I'm still hunting either way but they should be better than that in my experience.

Well maybe they are TOAST but I'm not the only one this is happening too if that is the case. I do know that they seem to charge all the way up .. but go down way to quick and both batteries at the same rate.I'll give Minelab a call next week and see what they tell me.
Mike

I have one guy here that his dont last as long either, but longer than 3 or 4 hours and when I charged and discharged and recharged his on my SunRay super charger with the chargeing station I have he can get a good 8-10 hours with no problem. I feel he either has a bad regulator in his pack, or the charger is not fully charging them. If you are using you house charger to charge them try the car charger next time, or if you are using the car charger try the house charger next time and see if it make a difference.

Hello Mike,
I have never used the minelab charger for the explorer or actually had one. It is possible that that it is simply a power supply which the user has to time to charge the batteries. If it is, use it long enough and it cooks the batteries. When I said "toast" I meant to say that they probably have deteriorated humorously. No offence meant.
Best regards,
bing

This is all greek to me. Some of you are buying recharable AAs and using them in Explorer? What about 1800 sold for Explorer. I have notice that I seem to charge battery more with Explorer II, then XS but never gave it much thought.

Well it's only one of those things you would think about if you are having these problems to begin with I really didn't notice it myself the first 3 weeks because my hunt sites were local and often not over 2 hours or so.
Hell, I was just GLAD to finally get an EXII that would run stable ... this is my 3rd. one. It's rock solid other than the battery issue.
Last night I let it run all night long with a freshly charged 1600 battery ( 9 hours) and the detector still shows a 1/4 charge on the meter this morning. That was with the coil positioned so no targets were being read and a solid threshold.
These batteries just don't hold up well when the detector is being ran over allot of targets. My rechargeables for my AA pack hold up very well.
I've used both car and wall chargers and still get the same short battery life out of both 1600's so they must be bad batteries. NEVER had this problem with my XS .. always got more battery life out of it hunting the same areas I'm hunting now
H.H.
