Battery power.

When my Elite has new batteries, there are four segments, perhaps five, showing on the battery strength meter. I have operated the unit with only two segments showing, but am not too sure as to how deep the transmitted signals are going. At two segments, sometimes the unit starts spazzing out, beeping and chirping and I'm thinking that it is time to install fresh batteries.

It is my understanding that good alkaline batteries have about 500 maH of life in them. some are lower and the rating is greatly dependent upon the drain rate. In any case, lets say 500 milliamphours. On ebay are nickel metal hydride batteries that are supposed to be true 9v ones with 280 maH capacity. That is roughly half what an alkaline battery would deliver however they can be recharged hundreds of times and only cost about $14 delivered for four of them. A charger that can operate from a car's lighter socket is perhaps another $20, so I'm thinking that having one set in the BH and one charging in a car and I'll be good for several years for perhaps $35.
Do any of you use rechargeable batteries in your BH and if so, what capacity/brand do you use and what usage do you get between chargings?

Thanks,

Mark
