Battery pack question ?

I was wondering what the rule of thumb is regarding changing out the relaceable ( 8 AA ) batteries in th Whites machines in general and the MXT in particular. As you probably know already, the " Low Batt " indicator shows when the voltage gets down to 8 volts. Should you replace them immediately or can you run them for longer and if so, how much longer ? Is there any chance of damage to the machine ? Will the machine be adversely affected as in loss of depth, erroneuos VDI, etc. Thanks in advance.

I've run my XLT for about 1 hour with the "low batt" indicator on, The display finally faded away but the detector still made all the beeps.
I'm not aware of any damage you could do by running this way.

The MXT is known to get a little bit noisier when the voltage gets below 10 volts and that is when Nancy changes her batteries, but to answer your question, no, it does not hurt the detectors to run the battery down. You usually don't have much time left anyway, usually just enough to get back to you car before you have automatic shut-off. If anything, you might be doing the battery more damage than anything, but even then, I have run them down to shut-off many times with no bad results that I know of.

Thanks Chip and Larry. I don't have the rechargeable pack and only use the disposable batteries. Yesterday I actually used the unit for about 2 hours, I estimate, after the low batt display started showing. The signals/beeps and the screen and VDI kept showing throughout the entire hunt. I will just change them out as soon as it shows a low voltage indication as a rule in the future. I was not within easy battery replacement range and didn't want to stop hunting this spot. Turns out that was a good decision. ( I posted my best find of the hunt in the MXT forum ) Thanks again for the advice.
