Battery life expectancy on Pro Pointer..??

Roland58

New member
Hi All,
Did a number of searches and found nothing on the subject. I just got my Pro Pointer and was curious about the expected lifespan of an alkaline battery? Basically, do I need to carry a spare with me on an all day hunt? (I know it depends on how often it is used, but, just a ballpark would help) Also, I have a number of rechargeable NiMH 9v batteries and I assume they are okay to use since the manual shows a 9v charger as an accessory. I know the NiMH will discharge more quickly, but, could I expect, say, half as long as an alkaline? Lastly, does the efficiency of the pointer decrease before the low battery warning is given or is it still up to par until then?

Sorry if these questions have been covered, honestly, I tried to find the answers! Thanks for any responses..........

My original battery lasted over a year but then I don't leave my PP turned on all the time. Batterry life in general is great.

Roland a battery in the Garrett will last along time. I use a Duracell 9v in mine. Man it lasts forever seems like. Not sure exactly, but I know I can hunt with the same battery for at least 8 hunts. My hunts are usually 3 hours or so. I always have a spare battery just incase it goes out, but it hasn't let me down yet. NOW I will tell you this. Don't get it wet or like I did leave it out in the rain. It won't act right. I just got mine dried out. Put it in a bag of rice and took a hair dryer to it and walla she works fine again. Damn fine machines if you ask me.

:usaflag:My PP works fine up until the low battery indicator sounds off. And even then I can get a few more holes out of it before it needs a new one.

I always carry spare batteries (for PP and MD), because they'll go at the worst possible time (plus you're going to need them sooner or later, just be sure to rotate them as you buy new), and "new" doesn't always equal "good". If you hunt with a partner, they may need a fresh set, so it might save having to spend time running to town for batteries after you've found that honey-hole :detecting:

I believe I read the battery life of the pro pointer was around 90 hours on an alkaline battery.

I hunt almost everyday from 4 to 12 hours a day. My 9 volt last me about 3 or 4 weeks. It gives no indication when its going to die...just the warning sound and like posted above you may get a couple more holes out of it by turning it off and then back on. I always carry spare battery's! Better to have them and not need them that to need them and not have them!

I get betwwen 35 and 40 hrs on mine its
Off till i need it... maybe others do better
but im happy with it it helps a LOT

A very big 'thank you' to all who responded. The answers were what I expected (hoped for). Had an opportunity to use it for the first time today........it does an incredible job. It was beginning to get dark when I finally got back close to my car and hit another target, so, I dug. The little LED light belongs on a keychain or something......it is just about useless on the probe. Overall, I am most impressed, it does a terrific job pinpointing!!!

BTW, magic, how do you get away with hunting 4 to 12 hours a day, almost, every day!?? I'm retired and can't get away with that!!! More power to you!!!
