Battery life - Cannon A20

I just purchased a new Cannon A20 digital camera and battery life (Alkaline) seems incredibly short. We took a few pictures over the course of maybe 15-20 minutes and the camera says replace batteries and turns off. We burned through 4 sets of batteries already and BestBuy is telling us this is normal. Is this right? Funny they don't mention that until after you buy it. What is the best rechargable battery? Do they last longer? Thanks.

Here is where I buy the Rechargeable NiMH Batteries (AA) for my Kodak digital camera and they last a lot longer than Akalines - as a matter of fact Kodak says don't bother to buy Alkaline batteries - use throw away lithium batteries or the NiMH's for use in their newer cameras.

Right at the top of this forum.. I use them in my Explorer and my Olympus C2500L. No contest... Read the site and you will learn...
The guy above doesn't pay for this site. I was just impressed and not many people visit this forum... But he's a great guy to deal with.
Guvner..

Rats, I bought batteries before seeing these posts and paid too much. I'll check this site out for sure though since I'd like another set for my Explorer.
This camera is odd, it litterly eats alkalines, I load them in at night and by morning the camera prompts me to replace them, even though I took maybe 5 photos the night before. I was sure the camera was defective but I put the set of NiMH in and its been fine for two days now.

Charles, I almost purchased the A20 yesterday but the store only had a demo and that wasn't working properly. I have been researching and having a hard time deciding between the A20 and the new Olympus 510Z. All the reviews are close and I almost feel like flipping a coin at this point.
Now that you have had it for some more time since this post, are you satisified and did you consider Olympus before you bought? Don in SJ

I use a Canon A50. I could take in excess of 40 photos before the alkaline batteris would give out. Now I use NiCads and I'm able to fill up two 8 Meg. CF cards for more than 80 pictures before having to recharge.
The charger and 1 NiCad battery was almost $100. Not cheap, but not bad either considering how many photos I take.
