battery charging follow up

I called the dealer and explained the problem and they thought everything was normal but I took the charger and power pack to a local 'Batteries Plus' store and they tested them both and determined that the charger was defective but the pack was fully charged. But they did not have a 15 volt adapter and suggested Radio Shack, who had a 15VDC 1000mA adapter. It has no indicator light but they said it would put out more power than I really need. we tried it in the pack and the light came on bright green. I guess that's good but if it was already fully charged should the light be on at all? And will this particular charger in fact burn out my Nimh pack? The Radio shack clerk just sort of shrugged and said that it should not. In other words he really isn't sure at all. I bought it but would like some feedback before I try to use it myself. At least they have a 30 day return policy.

The reason the light came on is normal as even a fully charged battery if you unplug and plug it in again it will charge a little more until the regulator circuit in the pack says it is charged.
Myself i would not use that charger as the 1000Ma is too fast of a charge and the batteries can get hot and ruin them or the regulator circuit in the battery pack. I would contact your dealer and ask him to get another charger from Minelab as if this was a new detector the charger will be replaced by Minelab under warranty.
If you really need a Minelab charger and your dealer can not get you one right now I can send you my brand new one and you can replace it when your dealer can get you a new one.

I concur with Rick, the radioshack wall wart is a DC power supply, not a charger.
It will continue to charge your batteries after they are fully charged. That can/will cause damage to the batteries.

Ooohhhh!:rage: I already went and did it anyway! The machine functions but I do not know if it is functioning correctly. air testing a penny, nickle, dime, quarter and 10k gold ring indoors produces all kinds of tones on each one and the meter readings are all over the place.

I will definitely take it back and get another one. I hope I have not ruined my machine already. In any event I am planning a trip to Melbourne Beach this weekend and will have to hope for the best.

The Sovereigns do make all kinds of noise and different then a beep and dig detector. The tones change on different items, most gold low tone and so are the nickles, the zinc pennies and the IH will be a higher tone and the copper pennies, silver and clad will be a higher tone. The pulltabs will be a tone between the nickle and the zinc penny.
When you say the meter is all over the place you do have it set in disc as in all metal it will not ID and be all over the place. If you were in disc the number may jump around a bit as you are swinging the coil over the coin, but what you go to do is swing it back and forth over the coin in a tighter swing and try to keep the numbers as high as you can and as steady as you can. Like the tones the meter reads what it is seeing at the time, so on the ground it can see several targets at a time and you got to swing over only one at a time to hear the right tone and ID.
Takes a while for some to get used to the tones and the threshold changing to the tone of the last item is seen, but have a little patience and it will be worth it.

Good Luck
Rick
