Batteries

I have been reading the forums and saw a few posts on batteries. Nicad, Nimh, Alkaline, Lithium, etc.
Most rechargeable batteries use

Nicad, biggest problem is they are rather low current density like 600-900mah per AA cell. They also don't hold a charge long, a few days to a few weeks typically.

Nimh, higher current density like 2000-2800mah, so per charge they last longer However they have the same problem, leave them charged in the detector
in a few days to weeks they loose their charge.

Alkaline, high density but really hold up. typically years without loosing a charge, but you cant recharge them.

Pre-Charged Nimh, There is a new type of Nimh called Pre-Charged and other names like eneloop, same current density but they hold their charge 5x longer than a standard Nimh. I used to use Nimh in my camera, seems like every time I picked it up the batteries needed charging, with the new pre charged Its been months and they are still up. Disadvantage they cost more, but IMO they are worth it.

Soon we should see Lithium rechargeable, also have a high current density, is lighter, takes less of them and they hold their charge almost indefinitely but require a different type of charger which is becoming cheaper. I plan on changing out my DFX with Lithium in the next few weeks.

The real bad boys were mercury batteries. They were fantastic but were so hard on the environment, they were discontinued. I kept one in the refrigerator for about 5 years, it still had it's charge.
