Bargain Land Star

Hello Bounty Hunter Users,
I picked up a radio shack brand detector that is exactly like the land star from a pawn shop for $40.00 !!!!! It wasn't picking up any coins at any depth beyond 1". The worker and I both agreed that the detector was in need of repair, but I was willing to buy at my own risk. Oh,,, the original price was $75.00. All this took place a day after I looked on the internet about the land star. Wow, a $300.00 minimum for a new one.Plus, the information said if the detector is not responding to signals the way it should..............change the batteries. First thing I did was(yep, that's right),change the batteries. Everything works amazingly good. What a stroke of luck. Rarely do things go my way. Question...................The machine only picks up a coin laying on the ground in my backyard about 5-6 inches max. Doesn't matter what the coin is, (all settings were tried, along with different areas of my yard). Is this about the maximum detection depth of the land star or do I need to send the detector in to check it out????? Also, since i have no warranty, does anyone know about the approx. price i would have to pay?
Thanks Pat

First off...great deal on the detector...next, When a coin is buried in the soil for any length of time, the soil around the coin leeches the minerals from the coin...this creates a halo of mineralized soil around the coin making detecting the coin easier for a detector...now that was a mouthful...having coins on the surface of the ground is not a true indication of a detectors depth capability...In any event, sounds like you got a good detector, and believe me...most coins are not below 6 inches here in NY that I have found...I did find a nasty zinc penny at 10 inches once...could barely tell it was a penny, and BTW, I own a Land Star also...I paid $275 for mine, so you got one incredible deal...You might want to give First Texas Products a shout and do not tell them you bought it in a pawn shop...just claim you are having problems with it, and you do not have the original receipt. You may be surprised by the response...

I definitely got a great deal. I plan to use it in areas where streets have been torn up in order to repave. A friend has used the tracker series on these streets and done very well, not only in his finds, but also in the performance of the machine such as; superb discrimination, very little if any chatter or erratic behavior and basically just sounding off on good targets. My two other friends and myself own different mid to top brand detectors that do not do as well because of electrical interference, ratio of iron and junk in the roads, slag and various minerals present. This all makes are detectors run a bit on the noisy side resulting in more guessing as to whether its a good target or not. We do get our finds, and a little deeper than his BH does, but his sure runs quiet. I like that for the street hunting! I'm anxious for the road work to begin again and hopefully make my brother googly eyed with my finds.(lol).
I'll be giving Bounty Hunter a call soon. My brother says Radio Shack is not the same as Bounty Hunter...............I disagree! He says there cheaper versions. Phooey on him.
Thanks for the reply.

Hi Krazyglue, A better way to air test is to hold the item above the search coil, and then swing the coil like you are detecting. While no air test is a real indication of true depth, this is the next best thing. Try it out! HH regards Nugget.:detecting:
