Barber! (You gotta put up with a *little* chatter)

Well, I have been avoiding any mode or settings that cause the pre-amp to be active. I just don't like the way it changes the sound of targets. To me, they sound "tinny" when the pre-amp is active.

After searching around an old elementary (built 1914) and finding a bunch of clad, I thought I would crank up disc (activating pre-amp) and see what I might be missing. I set disc all the way up to 60 and still ran sens around 65. I was 80 yards or so away from the school and things weren't too chattery.

Got a signal that hit one direction only - 60s and 70s. Pinpointed tight like a coin. Never got a low VDI. OK, I'll dig it. Before I started though, I went back to disc 10 and cranked sens up to 80 - got no signal.

Went back to first settings and cut a big deep plug and rechecked the hole. 92...ugh - classic symptom for a piece of copper pipe or something. Oh well, I'm already in the ground, so it's coming out.

Dug down to about 11-12 inches, checking hole every couple digs. Target disappears...oh, there it is in the dirt pile. I see "ONE DIME" with wreaths! Woohoo!

Also dug a shotgun base that had to be all of 14".

Bottom line for me? Gotta run a little hot and put up with a little chatter. If it gives a decent VDI in any direction without reading iron, it's gotta come out.

Thanks,
Wally

Like another thread on this forum said, there is no "ideal" magical setting for the F-75 that suddenly makes it the perfect detector any and everywhere. Soil conditions, rf interference and even weather can play a role in where we set our machines.

One of the coolest things about the 75 is the tons of adjustment flexibility we have, but keeping it simple. At some sites you'll get more depth with the sensitivity "cranked" up, others (due to soil minerals or masking) it will get more depth when toned down a little.

I think it's up to each one of us to learn the F-75 like the back of our hand, and not be afraid to try different set-ups while we are hunting... The critical factor is the experience of the 'tector swinger and willingness to be flexible in their settings.

Good find Wally. I tried those settings yesterday, and your right, at least in my soil I got an inch or so deeper in the up disc mode, although I stopped at 55 so I wouldn't miss any indians or deep wheaties. I was running 60 to 80 on the sens. I did find a wheatie at 8" in that mode, but also found it when I went down to disc 6 and sens 80, but it was a tad better signal. Found it along with two other wheaties at 6", this is a heavily hunted area. I think I have decided to get rid of two or even three of my other detectors and just hunt with the f75, and that includes my Explorer 11. Fisher has put out a really good machine this time.

Well, I wish I could tell you how well it worked for Barbers, but I have found a "trick". When I get a deep signal that won't lock but "feels" like it has potential I switch to All Metal and re-sweep. All it takes is one push of the menu button and one twist of the knob - two seconds. 90% of the time I get an iron reading from something big and deep. If it stays in the upper TID numbers I start digging.

Sometimes pulling the trigger and a slower sweep in Static will seperate targets, but if you hold it on too long it just goes out of tune to uselessness.

Some chatter ain't so bad. I'm used to ignoring The Voices most of the time, anyway.

I've been doing the same thing!

Has anyone else noticed that the knob has a built-in button? Pressing on it recalls last setting changed. Pressing it again goes back to detecting. Even easier than the regular button (to me) because it just bounces you in and out of last setting.
