Barber Quarter On The Surface And A Hunt After The Rain

Sooper Dave

Well-known member
Last week I went to ask an owner for permission about an abandoned house that she owns down the road. I go up to the door and knock and then step back off the porch onto the steps, I looked down and see 6 Morgan Dollars and 4 Indian Heads set in the concrete! By now the owner of the house comes to the door and is a nice little old lady that tells me about her husband that set the dollars in there when they built the house in the 50's. She said that her kids found the Indians in the yard as there was a very old house there that they tore down. She then tells me about a coin that she found a recently in her flower garden close to where the old well used to be. She goes in a gets it and I'm blown away when she hands me an 1833 Half Dime! We had a nice long talk about the good ole days and she said I can look around anytime and was trying to think of other old home sites in the area. I haven't been back to her place but did hunt around the other old house she owns yesterday and found a few coins that are in the group pic below.

Saturday I helped my Dad cut his grass and do some cleaning up around his place. Last week I cut the overgrown area between his fence and the neighbor's fence, but needed to cut some limbs this week along the fence. As I was walking through this little spot I saw a quarter laying on the ground and thought "cool I got me a quarter" but that quickly changed to real excitement as it turned out to be a 1914 Barber Quarter! I could not believe my luck! I took some pictures and left it laying so I could show my parents and my little girl my cool surface find. We figured out that it was brought up when they dug the hole for one of the wood post. The house was built in 1910 and I detected the front yard when I was a kid but didn't find anything this cool. What a cool story - great finds Dave !

You have to love the stories that only the older folks can tell. Don't let them stop with you pass them on. Thanks for sharing.

Great story! Good luck when you get back to her yard! Maybe you can find a relative to the bust coin!

Thanks guys. Yeah I love talking to the older folks as much as detecting. I'm an old soul and enjoy learning about how they had to work and what they did for fun before all this fast paced living took over. I have been put on a lot of good spots that I would not have known about if it wasn't for talking to folks that grew up in the area. GL & HH

nice stuff....don't you wished they were all that easy! (not really...that'd take half the fun out)

A Barber Quarters just laying on the ground! Who needs a $1500 metal detector.

You're definitely on a lucky streak!
You might want to consider buying some lottery tickets before that streak runs out.

Dave don't 'ya just love looking down & seeing a nice old quarter?! My last 2 center I spotted right as I was swinging over it...........(in a cornfield)
Nice Find!!!

Hey thanks guys! I got real lucky finding that Barber quarter on the surface. Dale that's awesome, I couldn't imagine finding a 2 Center on the surface! I love hunting old home sites in a plowed field.

I found a standing liberty quarter on top of some moss along a abandoned road plus Indians on well used bike/walking trail. in the last year I found about six dollars and two cell phones and two sets of car keys one of which I got 20 dollars for returning them (just pure luck) somebody asked if I found any keys. just for looking down as we have that habit
in this hobby. I can always find something at the big box stores. hint check the snow piles as they met off in big parking lots. cheers.
