Barber Dime and IH...

The Barber dime is a little... worn, but I will put it in a coin sleeve to protect what's left (har har). Yes that is really a dime. You can see the date at the bottom, 1907 and on the back "one di.." is visible. The IH is in a little better shape.

I went out with a couple of friends that are newcomers to the hobby. They lined up a few spots. One I had hunted before, which I told the guy on the phone the night before. When we started to hunt, he preceded to b*tch about how it was a waste of time for him to try to get spots because I have been to them all. He wasted a 1/4 tank of gas the previous day driving around "wasting time". I was happy to hunt the site again but he is too impatient. We hunted down the road at an old home site (home is gone). That is where the smashed Barber came from. By the time I had almost finished a tiny side yard strip... he and his wife had finished this site and gone across the road to another and determined that there was nothing there or that they could not find the spot... and the grass was too high. Ok it is their gig today so we go to the next spot.

At each site I had to hear the reiteration of the above "wasted time" whine. He is a talker and this was no little deal usually he wanted to "talk" for ten minutes. Well, the third spot was an old school site that I had never tried to hunt. They had talked to the wife the previous day (ok with her). The husband said we would be "wasting our time" since they had brought fill in when they put up their modular home. It was obvious he did not want us to detect.

So, God forbid, we had run out of their "wasted time" sites that they lined up the day before. This started another long bout with the whining. So we had passed an old house that we went back to. The guy was great and let us hunt. My buddy was still b*tching, as I told him we were in detecting Utopia. His wife just smiled. He tried to tell me how he is usually an extreme optimist. Yea, right!

I found the IH in about a half hour. They lasted about an hour and found a little clad. I was happy to see them go. I did not find another good coin but I had fun trying. Something tells me he is not cut out for detecting the way it is today.

I have tried to slow him down and give tips, etc. But he continues to hunt fast in a random pattern that often intersects areas where I have recovered finds. Ever hunt with anyone like this?

Tired of wasting my time trying to help - HH BF

Nice dime! Amazing that you can still see the date!

Detecting is not for the impatient. At least not for old stuff. People who need that instant gratification tend to become clad hunters if they can stick with the hobby. They're happy to come home with $10 in clad coins and an oldie every once in a while. Finding old coins takes work - more than just finding the site. Sure there are hot spots, sometimes, but I'm happy if I can come home with one good old coin or a piece of silver. The clad is just gravy.

If I were hunting with you and you said you'd been there before, I'd see that as a challenge! I'd work even harder to find something you missed.

And as far as fill dirt... you never know where that came from... it's always worth checking a bit since you're already there at the site and you have permission.

I don't know about you, but I get a woody with anticipation of a new site, any site, hunted already or not. And I love when someone says " you're wasting your time" because he told that to the last guy who asked and maybe, just maybe, he believed him.:clapping:

Hard to believe that is actually a dime...it looks more like a fossilized coin  Great finds nonetheless. On the issue of hunting partners intersecting you when you are making recoveries, I actually just had that happen to me just recently after I had found a Barber Dime. He went around me into my search pattern and he found a 1916D merc dime. SWELL!!

looks like someone chewed on that thing. Silver non the less. Nice IH!! I suppose some people think I'm silly swingin a detector whenever I can. However, I have the nicest coin collection of anyone I know, Their loss in my book. although it would be nice to hook up with someone as dedicated as myself once in a while.
