I found this at an old school site approx. 7 yrs ago (school long torn down) that was built in the 1800s and ceased to exist in the 1950s. The site is/has been an empty lot adjacent to a corn field since then. This is known as a "Bar Copper" as seen with 13 bars on the reverse and it is from 1785 - 1st circ. in NY. How it got all the way up here in Michigan to a school in the middle of no where built in the 1880s, I have no idea.. It is my best find EVER (worth approx. $3000) and NO, I won't sell it! There are "less valuable" copies made during the civil war era (approx. 1862) and are known by the A crossing UNDER the S instead of over the S as mine shows proof of being original. The later "copies" are worth 1/10th the value.
Has anyone else found one of these? I know 1 other fellow detectorist that found one (but) his is a later copy from the 1862 strikes.
There are also "other copies" which are 20th century and have a small C printed under the USA to show as proof of being a copy. Those are almost worthless (15.00 at best)..
P.S.
I've also found a lot of silver coin at this site over the years (as well as) school rings, ear rings, small trinkets of all types and relics of the era that the school was built (including) the brass hand held school bell that a teacher would call the kids in from recess with (sorry but- I did sell that long ago)!
