Bank of Upper Canada.....................

Hawkeye Jim

New member
Started a search of an old farmstead (cir 1865) and found this Bank Token. The obverse states: Bank of Upper Canada - 1857. The reverse states: Bank Token - One Penny. The coin/token is about 1 5/16 inches in diameter. Let me know If anyone has any info on this piece. HH - Hawkeye Jim.

that must be some mild soil you have there!

Was down about six to seven inches in nice black dirt - got it soaking in some ollive oil right now. Also found a couple of Indian Head cents that weren't too bad, but green as usual. Hawkeye Jim.

I found one with the C$ a couple years ago. I was really suprised to find one in Carolina. I understand they were commonly accepted in the U.S. at their face value. I had some information on them at one time, but who knows where it is now? Yours was worth twice as much as mine! I think they are really cool. Nice find!

Give this link a shot: http://collections.ic.gc.ca/bank/english/emar81.htm

Since they are the same size as a large cent or British copper, I believe they were accepted as a coin. Just like the "hard Times" tokens were.....
The 2 you guys have are in nice shape.....mine are pretty rotted

When I pulled her up, I thought I had found my first large cent - one of these days!!!
