bandido II problem

just located a new hunting partner. he uses another brand, but good machine. He said his previous partner has a bandido II, and while hunting a local park i hunt a lot, the friend noticed he never finds quarters. he finds nickels, dimes pennies, but not quarters. the new friend had a read on a quarter, the bandido ii would not read it. they played with the machines settings, still no read. the quarter was retrieved, and he said it would not read it on top of the ground, but reads the other coins. anybody ever heard of such a thing? i know most folks disc so hard they don't find nickels, but a quarter is like a buried hubcap on my units. board problem maybe. i suggested ship her back for a checkup. still curious though lets hear from you pros, and when it gets back, lets see who guessed right.

Try a different coil first. I have a Bandido, and could not get the detector to ground balance nor discriminate at all. Sent it in to Tesoro, and received a call from them, they told me it was a bad coil. Purchased a new coil, and that solved the problem. I really though I had a serious problem, and it turned out to be just the coil. So if you have access to a Umax coil, switch the coil out and see what the results are.

It sounds to me like the Bandido had a ground balance mis-adjustment, with it being set too positive. It can happen and you will lose higher conductive coins. The ground balance should be set to just spot on (no change in threshold)or just a small decrease in threshold sound in more mineralized ground. In less mineralized soil you can get away with a slightly positive ground balance with a minor rise in threshold sound while checking ground balance in all-metal mode.

I agree with Hombre. In mild ground a lot of detectors with manual ground balance can be ground balanced so positive that quarters, halves and dollars won't be detected, and I've seen one that could be set so positive it wouldn't detect a dime. If it isn't operator error by having it ground balanced way too positive, it's likely either the ground balance pot or coil is bad.

thanks fellas, will try it all. got to make contact with him in week or so, lives out of town and works. shame to see someone get frustrated as a newbie. did that with my first unit and no manual. always go to the folks who do it regular and right! and if that does not work, which i'm betting one will, Tesoro still has the best warranty and great service!
