well, i have not heard back yet on permission to hunt the old schoolyard in the photo below, so i might have to pay him a visit in person. Behind this old school is a baseball diamond and field still used today. The diamond, field and concession area are owned by the county school district, where the old abandoned school itself and grounds immediately around it are privately owned. So, i made it out yesterday to the ballfield with my detector. I had a couple hours to kill, so i wanted a quick sampling. ended up with about $5 in old clad and a few matchbox cars. A more thorough search is to come. The area i had access to showed signs of being virgin soil, so i cant wait to hear back about the school itself. Then today I embarked on a totally different type of treasure hunting. Its Morel mushroom season in my neck of the woods. So today, My wife,my 6 and 4 yr old daughters and myself took to the woods in search of the Filet Mignon of mushrooms, the Morel !!! This was my kids first mushroom hunt and of course they did great. Young kids are naturally great mushroom hunters because they are closer to the ground, whereas my wife and i have sore backs from hunching over and searching for a few hours. Had to leave the detector home for this one. We found about a dozen small morels, kids finding most of them. The small morels fry up pretty good too, but we'll have to head back out in a day or two to find some bigger ones. If you have never had a fried morel mushroom, all i can tell you is that its nearly a religious experience!!! They are delicious! Sorry, no photos from today or yesterday, but the schoolyard is from my last trip there and the mushroom is a stock photo i found for you. The smurfs were a little ticked off for evicting them and eating their houses, but if you have had one, you understand! HH! JJ
