Ballfields and mushrooms

well, i have not heard back yet on permission to hunt the old schoolyard in the photo below, so i might have to pay him a visit in person. Behind this old school is a baseball diamond and field still used today. The diamond, field and concession area are owned by the county school district, where the old abandoned school itself and grounds immediately around it are privately owned. So, i made it out yesterday to the ballfield with my detector. I had a couple hours to kill, so i wanted a quick sampling. ended up with about $5 in old clad and a few matchbox cars. A more thorough search is to come. The area i had access to showed signs of being virgin soil, so i cant wait to hear back about the school itself. Then today I embarked on a totally different type of treasure hunting. Its Morel mushroom season in my neck of the woods. So today, My wife,my 6 and 4 yr old daughters and myself took to the woods in search of the Filet Mignon of mushrooms, the Morel !!! This was my kids first mushroom hunt and of course they did great. Young kids are naturally great mushroom hunters because they are closer to the ground, whereas my wife and i have sore backs from hunching over and searching for a few hours. Had to leave the detector home for this one. We found about a dozen small morels, kids finding most of them. The small morels fry up pretty good too, but we'll have to head back out in a day or two to find some bigger ones. If you have never had a fried morel mushroom, all i can tell you is that its nearly a religious experience!!! They are delicious! Sorry, no photos from today or yesterday, but the schoolyard is from my last trip there and the mushroom is a stock photo i found for you. The smurfs were a little ticked off for evicting them and eating their houses, but if you have had one, you understand!:) HH! JJ

oh yeah, jj, 5 bucks in old clad is a good day. good luck when you get to hit the old school grounds, it sure looks like a good spot. i can't recall ever having morel mushrooms, but i have heard they are really good. good luck, i hope you get permission. hh,

i have never been mushroom hunting. too afraid of getting the bad ones not knowing.... ya poor smurfs i hope gargamel dont get them.

Man you did good on the ball field with what little time you put in. Good luck talking with the owner of the old school and I love mushrooms but never hunted them.

Thanks for the replies. The town this school and ballfield are in is literally 4 blocks large and mostly abandoned. Its nearly a ghost out in the middle of nowhere. I don't think this field, or probably even that schoolyard have ever been detected from what i could tell. The field is still used today, but there was no lack of good targets and i couldn't begin to cover the area i wanted to. Alot of deep older clad mixed with alot of deep and shallow newer clad. I think the ground still holds alot of old silver, and i drool thinking about the area around the school itself. I'm excited to get back out there. thanks again for the replies. HH, JJ

And Cosmo, 100 miles seems like a long way to go for morel, but i think i would probably walk that to find them if i had to . Mmmmmmmmm!!! Trout and morels!.....sorry, drooling again.. HH, JJ

Dang you JJ I love mushrooms but don't know what to look for Too afraid of dying Ive got an old Indian buddy he shure does find em and cook em so I just do some stuff for him and he sure does feed me good he usually has me cut his grass for a great shrum and steak dinner

Yes, JJ, 100 miles does sound like a long way to go but if I come back with a couple bags of morels the gas is more than paid for. Actually I have some land up there in the north woods that I use for hunting, fishing, camping or just getting away from the rat race of the city on the weekends. It
