Balancing

I am new at metal detecting, just a few hours of hands on a V3i I just purchase. I am having trouble ground balancing it. I have it set to C&J, factory settings, 10 DD coil, and I can not get it to balance or get it to give me a good reading on anything. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong. I read the book a few times and watch all the videos on You Tube. Any help would be appreciated.
 
First pull the trigger to put your detector in all metal. Then search in all metal for a clean piece of ground where there are no targets. The detector will read 00.0. Then holding the coil about a foot above the ground pull the trigger, then press and hold the enter button. Now pump the coil to about 1.5 inches of the ground until the tone is steady. Release the enter and then the trigger and start hunting.
