Bad spot in coil cable.

Sand Scoop

While at the beach today the Excal started making different noise when making a swing.I narrowed it down to a bad spot in the cable about 18" from the detector. I figure I can cut out the bad area and resolder or cut in a waterproof connector..I rather cut the bad spot out and resolder.Has any one done this before and maybe give some pointers.

I had to repair a cable on my detectors a couple times.after soldering, i used waterproof electric tape i found at ACE hardware.i believe it was called ''self annealing''. then coated the patch with black rv silicon. if you do any diving then you should invest in the connector also.good luck, sam in ms

Heat Shrink Tubing is the only way to travel when it comes to a good sealed repair. Paint the wires first with some rubber Cement (Shoe Goo) to go a step further in keeping it waterproof, but a good quality heat shrink tubing put on the outter casing with a heat gun will do wonders. Don't rely on one or the other. You need two lines of defense IMHO.

I bought a 3M adhesive heat shrink kit from Ebay that will shrink over the small wire and a larger to shrink over the whole thing. There all the water proof type so hopefully that will keep the cable dry on the inside.
